The Italian Catholic archdiocese of Matera-Irsina, in Basilicata, has existed under this name since 1986. It is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Potenza-Muro Lucano-Marsico Nuovo.

[edit] History

In 1954 the archdiocese of Matera was split from the historical archdiocese of Acerenza-Matera. In 1976 Matera lost its status as archiepiscopal see, and the diocese was united with the diocese of Gravina-Irsina, to form the diocese of Matera e Irsina. The following year this was elevated to an archdiocese.

The diocese of Matera had first existed independently, up to the year 1203.[1]
