From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Archbishop of Armagh was the senior prelate in the medieval Irish church. Although initially run by bishops, the earliest bishops doubled as abbots, with the bishop becoming the junior of the two positions. From 8th century if not before, the house of Armagh claimed foundation from St Patrick, and the position of comarba Pátraic ("successor of Patrick") was held by the abbot of Armagh until the position of abbot and bishop were merged again in the 12th century, with the creation of the archbishopric of Armagh.

Patricius |
St Patrick's tenure as bishop of Armagh, as with many of the earlier Armagh bishops, is based on later tradition and is not historically certain. Two years of death are normally given for Patrick, either 457/61 or 493, though neither is based on good evidence. |
