Arbortext

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arbortext is an XML-based publishing system available from PTC. Arbortext was also the name of the privately-held company in Ann Arbor, Michigan that developed and maintained the software from 1989 to 2005.

In 2004, Arbortext purchased the Swindon(UK)-based Advent Publishing Systems, Ltd., creators of the publishing software Advent 3B2. This software is widely used for publishing of scientific, technical and medical journals (STM) journals (such as the Astrophysical Journal, Cell, Nature, and Science).

In July of 2005, Arbortext was acquired by Massachusetts-based PTC.

[edit] History

In the mid-1990s the GUI for the Arbortext Editor (then called "Adept Editor") was ported from Solaris to the Galaxy Application Environment in order to more readily support non-Unix operating systems, in particular Microsoft Windows and IBM OS2. (Galaxy--produced by Visix Software--was one of many PIGUI packages.) When Visix ceased support of Galaxy Arbortext purchased source code rights and maintained the Galaxy interface along with its application software. Arbortext has since converted the Windows version to the native Microsoft interface but continued to support Galaxy in the Solaris version for backwards compatibility reasons. The PTC copyrights still mention Galaxy.
