Hi! I've added a few details remembered from being around the line at the time of it's closure. I went camping near the current site of Herston Halt in the summer of 1971 and the Hampshire 3 - car (1131, actually) throbbed back and forth. The next year BR's contractors had reached roughly the site of Herston when we arrived for our holiday. Read through and see what you think. Britmax 20:36, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ouse Valley Railway

This would definitely be an interesting article and I am more than happy to help out. As with the Wealden line, there seems to be scant information as to the exact circumstances surrounding the abandonment of plans for the line. All I've found so far are two old articles from the Railway Magazine. The Act(s) of Parliament (off the top of my head I would say there must be two - one authorising and one abandoning) are easily sourced and I could get them online. But what about the extent of Overend Gurney's involvement? There's already a well-referenced article on the bank, albeit with no real mention of its impact on railway projects. Are you aware of any legal actions against the bank by the LBSCR? Assuming that you already have dug up some info, the best way to start would be to add to the existing stub with what you have or start something new in your sandbox; do you have enough info to put together a route map? I've found out a bit more about Overend Gurney, "The weakest link by the 1860s was the firm of Overend Gurney & Co. It successfully floated as a joint stock enterprise in 1865, having previously failed to merge with the National Discount Co., but it did not tell investors about the huge losses it was making in non-discount activities. The firm had in recent years diversified away from the now less profitable discount business into reckless lending of substantial funds on a partnership basis in shipbuilding, ship-owning, grain, iron, railways and other unlikely ventures. Although rumours were circulating long before its final collapse, intervention was impossible because of the absence of a regulatory structure. When financial uncertainty struck in 1866, the Bank [of England] refused to lend it money and the firm went under, causing an enormous financial panic that then forced the Bank to lend £4 million to other discount houses, banks and merchants.", see M. Ok, here's the story, the company - Marples Ridgway Ltd is still listed as active [1], so in theory you should be able to request details of the share transfer registration completed by Marples back in 1962 odd. In theory! It is however a public record, and I remember having done this once before for another company that you can ask Companies House to print off the documents from their microfiche and send it to you for a fee. I also remember however seeing an article reporting Marples speech to parliament about the whole thing, and I do think he said the shares went to his wife. There were two libel actions which followed. I'm still researching the whole thing and hoping to add to the Marples article! Ravenseft (talk) 20:35, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Interesting point you make about the lack of diesel units. It would make sense given that the line had been switched from steam working a year or so previously and that (I'm supposing) it wouldn't have been high on the priority list for receiving replacement diesel units. If you turned up anything interesting at the PRO, do let me know. I've also read your comments about the East Grinstead layout (I agree with you here and will add a comment shortly) and the Three Bridges - TWW line - can you add/change anything in the existing article on the line based on what you found? I always found it bizarre that they could justify closing the section when Forest Row and Grange Road had decent annual receipts, plus they must have been aware of the potential for residential development in the area.
