Aquila Airways

Aquila Airways was founded by Barry Aikman using two ex Royal Air Force Short Sunderland flying boats for freight work. During the Berlin Airlift a further 10 Sunderlands were acquired, flying from the River Elbe to Lake Havel. In association with BEA and BOAC Aquila later operated scheduled and charter flights from Southampton to Portugal, Spain and Jersey, as well as freight work as far as Australia.

In 1952 Short Solents were acquired second hand. Facing competition from land based aircraft and unable to obtain replacement flying boats (offers to purchase the prototype Princess boats having been rebuffed), the company ceased operations in 1958, (leaving TEAL as the only long range flying boat passenger airline).
