Aquatic Sports Association of Malta

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, commonly known as ASA, was founded in 1926 and is one of the oldest in Europe. It represents the swimming and waterpolo disciplines. The ASA is a full member of the official European sports body Ligue Européenne de Natation, LEN.

Waterpolo is the most popular summer sport in Malta. There are currently nine active waterpolo clubs. All are coastal localities, since the sport spread in seaside resorts in the 1930s. The most renowned clubs are Sliema ASC and Neptunes WPSC. Only one club, Otters ASC represents Gozo.

Sliema ASC have won the First Division 33 times, first in 1925 as Sliema Utd. Neptunes WPSC follow with 18, Valletta Utd ASC with 11, San Giljan ASC with 8, Sirens ASC with 6 and Marsascala SC once.

The game has, unfortunately, seen a decline since the national championship was moved from the seaside pitches to the freshwater swimming pool at Tal-Qroqq in Msida. In recent years several clubs, including former Valletta United ASC, Birzebbugia ASC and Barracudas ASC have ceased competing in the national leagues.

The European Junior Championships were held in Valletta, Malta in 1976 and 1985 respectively.

[edit] Malta National Waterpolo Team

The Malta National Waterpolo Team took part in the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam, competing against Great Britain, Yugoslavia and Luxembourg. The Maltese team travelled by steamship and then train to Amsterdam, taking the water only hours after their arrival in the Dutch capital. Due to the lack of a freshwater pool in Malta, the team had trained in a water reservior in Rabat VERA TA!!
