[edit] April 2008

Should the Wikipedia main page article about Ima Hogg be listed as a prank? This person really did exist, and is not necessarily a prank. Sure, funny name and April Fool's and all, but it's still not really a prank. Jelloboi (talk) 04:54, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, but the description's fake. (That is, she wasn't a circus emcee and never rode to meet the Queen in Hawaii on ostrich-back.) I edited the entry here to reflect that. Shorelander (talk) 05:36, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually, the article says she did run a circus, and meet the Queen of Hawaii. The Main Page blurb doesn't say she met the Queen on ostrich-back. --Maxamegalon2000 05:57, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Oops, my bad. Shorelander (talk) 06:09, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

The "ACT on Campus" bullet point was effectively just a press release by a political group rather than a prank as such and should probably be deleted? 222.154.10.191 (talk) 08:57, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

The HeyCosmo Facebook app which Arsenalinteractive keeps adding isn't a prank, it's just an advertising tie-in. Is it possible to prevent one person from editing a page for a while? Rwald (talk) 10:23, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

PlanetGTA has a story on a fifth trailer after a hostile takeover from EA, announcing Chris Tucker as voice actor for Nico Bellic. [1] - Redmess (talk) 10:44, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

93.3 The Bone's morning talk show had an April Fools' joke this morning pertaining to the Dallas Cowboys changing their name to the Arlington Cowboys. Currently, I don't have access to citate this. Anyone care to help me out so it can be added? Zenchi (talk) 13:34, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the 7chan stunt - "7chan's domain and servers will be given away to the Association for Senegalese and Somalian Negritude for Indigenous Gregorian Gold-mining Enunciater's Relief and Salvation, so they can accomplish their goals of liberation." - Spell out the acronym and ask yourself if Wikipedia really wants to promote that kind of vile humor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.95.216.224 (talk) 20:16, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Earlier, it *was* spelled out; I removed that, since there's no need to be explicit. Still, anyone who knows enough to spell it out in their head is probably mature enough to handle it. Rwald (talk) 20:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

I know that forum posts are generaly not acceptable under Wikipedia's standards for references, but in cases where linking to a webpage displaying prank material would be unhelpfull as a reference because the content would revert to normal on April 2, no adknowledgement has been made on the website it appears on to cite and it's not notable enough to have been picked up by 3rd party news reporters, might referencing a post on the site's offical forums of people talking about the prank be admissible? EllePollack (talk) 00:23, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

hey there's a fake D&D 4th edition character sheet at Wizards of the Coast, is that an AFJ? [[2]] --swatki —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.66.49.254 (talk) 03:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Source #4 (flying penguins) is already broken: the article seems to have been removed. How to handle this? - Redmess (talk) 12:42, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DeviantArt's early joke

Deviantart follow-up. Please clean-up properly the following contribution before submission, it was borrowed from one of Deviantart directors journal: http://wilderwein77.deviantart.com/journal/17599687/ (*) and it has upset many users since it was done earlier than April 1st: http://thespook.deviantart.com/journal/17600253/

Begin quote: "Hello, fellow manipulators. The CEA (Copyright & Etiquette Administration ) has taken upon themselves a great task to deal with the problem of vague linking of stock and resources and has therefore decided that any submission to the digital galleries that does not directly link to the stock provider or to the image used, will be removed.

This includes failure to inform the usage of own photographic material; as of today, all deviants who does not state their resources/stock/information of own photography in their comments will be removed from deviantArt effective immediately.

Do not start reporting these; a seperate team within the CEA has been assembled to deal with the issue.

The procedures will be starting monday next week. Further information will be given tomorrow." End quote.

IMHO, unlike other pranks, they went too far, another comment http://comments.deviantart.com/5/17599687/691984755. Like I said, please clean-up/ellaborate/discuss before submission Callmeback (talk) 11:49, 1 April 2008 (UTC))

I agree that this went a bit too far, not in the least because it wasnt done on the day itself. We could post what you said and follow the story on the talk page. - Redmess (talk) 12:32, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Alright, I'm following the site closely but I'll leave the addition to someone more experienced, I don't want to mess-up the page. I've read some of the other jokes, the difference here is that some people are trying to make a living with this site. The avatar joke is pretty harmless, the 'I'm going to delete all your work' prank made one day earlier is frankly a little disturbing. Like someone posted at the second url, they wanted to make the ultimate joke but they went too far. I guess we have to wait until the dust settles to see the actual repercusions. Callmeback (talk) 19:00, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Here's the formal apology of the Artistic Relations team, admiting they went too far. I was wondering if anyone can help me and resume the story in a couple of lines:
From http://moonbeam13.deviantart.com/journal/17623100/
"Dear deviantART Community, The Artist Relations team would like to apologize for it's poor taste and execution of various 'April Fool's' related "pranks". While no malice was intended, there was a definite lack of forethought and beginning these antics so early was a severe lack in judgment.
We have worked very hard to build relationships with you on various levels and I would hate to believe that something as silly as this would hinder that going forward. However, I'm aware that many of you are angry and feel deceived by the actions of this team and as such we will have to work extra hard to regain your trust and respect. There is no blame to throw around, Artist Relations is a team and just as we celebrate each other's successes, we also stand together when it's obvious we've been giant dumbasses and that's what happened. People got carried away and things got out of hand. We're human and we move on and I'm hoping you'll move on with us.
I personally really dislike April Fools and have tried to stay away from the 'activities' for the most part for most of my life because I find it often blows up badly. What's intended as entertainment generally causes anger because when your intention is to pull one over on someone, they generally don't get the warm fuzzies when they find out they've been taken. The whole premise just confuses me but regardless - bring on April 2nd."

[edit] Pizza Hut

I removed the Pizzahut.com 'PastaHut' entry from the list because it isn't an April Fools joke - I had it last night (and it was good!).

...PizzaHut sells Pasta since ever, the faked logo IS a Joke. —Preceding unsigned comment added by YouR.Fate (talk • contribs) 15:39, 1 April 2008 (UTC) by youRFate —Preceding unsigned comment added by YouR.Fate (talk • contribs) 15:41, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

It's just a marketing gimmick, not an April Fools. --209.145.94.182 (talk) 16:05, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Price Is Right showcase

What exactly was the April Fools' Day showcase on The Price Is Right today? I was unable to view the show, but am still curious as to what it was. It might help to add it to the article to show why it was an AFD showcase. --GVOLTT How's my editing?\My contribs 20:26, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

yeah, i'm wondering about that too. dposse (talk) 01:57, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] All Things Considered

I am pretty positive this is an April Fool's Joke. Maybe I'm the only one who listened to All Things Considered Today.

Agree, Google doesn't turn up relivant hits for the "composer" and the site the reviewer is said to be from doesn't exist. The fact that someone would have to think that it could be true, well, I'll let people add that to their own mental commentary of postmodernism. EllePollack (talk) 00:31, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Hogwarts Experience Becomes the Raistlin Experience (website prank)

The Hogwarts Experience Becomes the Raistlin Experience

Earlier today on Hogwarts-Experience a April Fools prank was pulled. One of the moderators took over the site with help of the Admin's husband. He took away her power on the site along with some other people's. He changed the sites name from the Hogwarts-Experience to the Raistlin Experience. Also he created a thread for his take over. There he posted Educational Decrees, people discussed there opinion of the take over, people wear locked in cages, and there was a massive battle between the supporters of the moderator and the supporters of the Admin.

[edit] Lack of April Fools prank this year by Slashdot??

Does anyone have any explanation for Slashdot's lack of a April Fool's 2008 joke? I find it very interesting considering they were one of the first (if not the first) promulgator of April Fool's jokes on the web. -Nodekeeper (talk) 06:45, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Actually there is one: http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/01/0456250, apparently if you follow some link you get 'rickrolled'. Callmeback (talk) 01:10, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ely Minnesota Secedes from the Union!

I'm not sure if this should be added, or what section it should be put in (it was on the web, in newspapers, and on tv news) but Ely Minnesota started a hoax that Canada had offered to buy their city and move it to canada. Here are a few sources if someone cares to add it: http://www.startribune.com/local/17184461.html http://www.ely.org/ 71.214.151.165 (talk) 07:43, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ABC World News Now

ABC (America)'s overnight news program World News Now announced World News Now at Noon. "Yay! We're finally going to get some regular sleep! ... We're going to be replacing your regular local newscast at noon." No start date, just "Look for us." According to the well-connected industry blog TVNewser, the show will read emails from viewers who thought it was real. 68.165.76.80 (talk) 07:56, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] MacTalk Australia

MacTalk Australia (Aus. largest online Mac user community) admins announced they had been acquired by Fone Zone, an Australian mobile phone dealer and Apple reseller. Furthermore the information link directed to a video of Rick Astley. http://forums.mactalk.com.au/19/46978-april-fools-mactalks-future.html

Thought this may be relevant for the "In websites" section. IMac600 (talk) 08:49, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Homework ban in Toronto

I assumed this was an April Fools joke when I saw it in the news yesterday - http://www.canada.com/topics/news/story.html?id=ce98cf83-414a-4dff-81f1-ea6868a3b999&k=21506 - but it was reprinted today in the Globe and Mail - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080402.wlhomework02/BNStory/lifeFamily/home - is this a joke that the Globe and Mail fell for, or what? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.173.133.233 (talk) 16:34, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] →In websites: removing non-notable items that do not have their own article

This has never been the practice in previous April 1 articles and means that the list becomes far from comprehensive. Is this now standard Wikipedia practice or one user taking it upon themselves to police this? Saltiresfan (talk) 10:28, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] World of Warcraft: Molten Core

It should be noted that Molten Core is going to be released for the Atari 2600. Alec92 (talk) 00:55, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
