[edit] History

Apollo's Fire was founded in 1992 by Jeannette Sorrell, with the assistance of Roger Wright, then Artistic Administrator of the Cleveland Orchestra (now with the BBC). The orchestra received a startup grant from the Cleveland Foundation in 1992, and made its debut to critical acclaim in June of that year. Since then, Apollo’s Fire has performed in Toronto, Washington D.C., Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Columbus, Detroit, Pittsburgh, with the American Bach Project in Milwaukee, and the New World Symphony’s Baroque Festival in Miami. In 2004 Apollo’s Fire appeared at two prestigious international festivals: the Gilmore International Festival in Michigan, and the Ojai Festival (CA) presenting Bach’s St John Passion with “stunning eloquence.”

Apollo’s Fire is frequently broadcast on National Public Radio and can also be heard on Britain’s BBC, Canada’s CBC, European Community Radio, and in Northeast Ohio on WCLV and WKSU. Apollo’s Fire has been featured on several national holiday broadcasts on NPR as well as NPR’s World of Opera and SymphonyCast.

Together with Jeannette Sorrell, Apollo’s Fire received the 1995 Noah Greenberg Award from the American Musicological Society, given for an outstanding project involving the collaboration of scholars and performers, and was awarded the 1998 Northern Ohio Live Achievement Award for Classical Music.

[edit] Music Director

Jeannette Sorrell has quickly won international attention as a leading voice in the new generation of early music conductors. She studied at the Tanglewood Music Festival under Roger Norrington and Leonard Bernstein, was a conducting Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, and studied under Robert Spano at Oberlin College. As a guest conductor and soloist she won rave reviews for her 2001 debut with the Handel & Haydn Society (Boston). She is a frequent guest conductor for baroque projects at the Oberlin Conservatory, where she led a production of Handel’s Alcina in 2003, and more recently concerts of the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra. As a harpsichordist she studied with Lisa Crawford and Gustav Leonhardt, and took both the First Prize and the Audience Choice Award in the 1991 Spivey International Harpsichord Competition. She has performed as recitalist throughout the United States, France and The Netherlands and served on the faculty of the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute from 1990–1994. Jeannette Sorrell received the 1994 Erwin Bodky Award, given to an outstanding young performer in early music, and the 1995 Noah Greenberg Award from the American Musicological Society, given for an outstanding scholarly and artistic project. She received the Cleveland Arts Prize 2003 Special Citation for Distinguished Service to the Arts, and in May 2004 received an honorary doctorate from Case Western Reserve University.

[edit] Concerts

Apollo's Fire typically has five subscription concerts per year. Each is played in multiple venues in Cleveland and the surrounding area. In the summer, they usually perform a Renaissance concert at the "Baroque Barn".
