Apocalypse (Music)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apocalypse was a heavy metal band active from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. They primarily operated in the UK, Europe and Asia, and was one of the first heavy metal bands to play in the Middle East. They played venues all over Europe and Asia and were somewhat popular, but a disastrous U.S. tour proved to be the beginning of the end. Apocalypse was a controversial act, wearing zombie makeup, and performing rituals on stage. While many consider them to be great entertainers, few considered them metal, as their sound, especially the lead vocalist, was too melodic. The band vanished during the rise of Grunge in the early 1990s. The lead vocalist went on to a career in film, becoming a minor celebrity in Hong Kong. Talk of a reunion in the late 1990s came to nothing.

[edit] Origins

Apocalypse was formed in the early 1980s, but the members of the band had played together in other acts. Rumor has it that they were all related to one another. Apocalypse had four members and at least two different lineups. The members wore zombie makeup and took their names from the directors of horror movies.

Romero was the lead singer. His voice was soft and melodic, causing some anger from Metal fans. His on stage antics did something to quiet critics, as he was able to frighten fans. Romero was never seen without his makeup. He was at one time romantically involved with Page Three girl, Maria Whittaker and even put her in one of the bands videos.

Argento was the guitarist. He was classically trained, but was able to put out a mean riff. His skill did much to beef up the bands image.

Bava was the Bass guitar player. His girlfriend at the time, Annabel Chong, appeared in one of the bands last videos. She later went on to become a porn star.

Fulci was the drummer. His ability with the drums also helped to balance the softness of Romero with extremely savage beats.

Argento was replaced for a time with Russo, but later returned.

Fulci was replaced by Savini, another accomplished drummer.
