Aplin's Weir started out as small stop weir, built in 1927 to catch the water that was released from the Gleeson's Weir for the growing population of Thuringowa and Townsville.

It wasn't until 1943 that the concrete Weir that is now Aplin's Weir was built, it took around 12 months to complete.

The area of water stored here is used for water sports and fishing.
