[edit] Music Career as DJ
As documented in the early years Andy started off life organisng after parties in his various flats in and around Edinburgh. This moved to club nights and Andy was a part of the hugely successful Majestica brand where top DJs from Lucien Foort to Trisco and local boys Shakti & Logrey and Brian Fisher also plied their trade. Andy was one half of Shakti & Logrey going under the guise of Shakti with his partner Logrey (David Amos). With the Majestica parties came recognition of Shakti & Logreys skills as DJ's and they were soon being booked to play parties and birthdays all over the capital. This culminated in Andy playing at Gail Porter and Dan Hipgrave's wedding at the Malmaison in Edinburgh.
Moving on in his life and Andy soon left Edinburgh and travelled to London to work and DJ in the capital of England. He quickly set up nights at renowned clubs such as Nambucca, The Luminaire and Meet to name a few. He spent time building events and clientele and understood how the club scene worked and what people were after. Andy soon created his club name trademark which was Chunky Funky - due to the Chunky Funky House music that they played at events - and this nomadic club toured the capital for 6 years, building up following and sponsorships along the way. These events featured DJs. Live Vocalists, Sponsorship giveaways, from sexy clothes, to sex toys and other outrageous gifts. These special events attracted Chunky Funky a loyal following and with Andy then having a platform to demonstrate his ever increasing catalogue of music, he teamed up with London singer Sanchita Farruque to write and perform tracks.
Andy and his promotional partner K-Loc are credited as being masters at building up trade for empty establishments, and have risen up venues from scratch such as Nambucca in Holloway, The Luminaire in Kilburn and the @ Club in Arsenal - all now respected band and club nights on the London circuit. Andy and K-Loc had a knack of finding the right venues and turning them into hot spots and in doing that they were never short of events to run or venues to promote. This club lifestyle enabled Andy to be in the party scene every night of the week meeting more promoters and DJs and increasing his contacts and gig list.
Andy's DJing has carried him to all corners of the globe and he has performed in the UK - numerous clubs from Turnmills, The Arches, The Honeycomb, The Phoenix the list is endless as well as performing in cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Sydney , Melbourne and Paris. In 2004 Andy played to over 100,000 people at the Love Parade in San Francisco - performing a mixture of his own music coupled with others.
[edit] Productions
Andy released his first record in 2000 when he released "The Sky is Falling" on Scottish label Epok. This was a Shakti & Logrey release and was co-written with Scottish Actress and Vocalist Jenny Foulds. The song was featured on various radio shows and DJ playlists and convinced Andy & David that they were on the right lines with their music.
In 2002 Andy then broke free from the partnership with Logrey and set up label Shivar. The first release was called Sunset and was an instant hit. DJs up and down the country were playing this new deeper and more progressive sound of Shakti and this led to DJ bookings and yet more radio airplay for Andy. Futher more progressive records were released including a remix of the earlier hit “The Sky is Falling” , “Brazilian Summer”, “Red Coupon” plus a co-write with Yana Kay on “Crowded Room” .
In 2004 Andy signed a deal to release DJ mix albums under the Chunky Funky guise and this led to 8 Chunky Funky CDs being released all over the UK. These mixes were mostly done by Andy and Chunky Funky DJs but also contained guest mixes from DJ Frankie Jr (US) and DJ Lee Garner (UK).
Coming into 2005 and Andy changed his guise from Shakti to Andy Craig and embarked on productions in the more funkier sound of House. This has led to him producing various tracks in 2007 + 2008 such as Cant Get Enough, Breathe In and Laidback & Groovin - with artists such as Steve Hoy, Neil Athale, K-Loc, Rowetta and Zelma Davis...Andy can count among his admirers top singers and production companies such as Barbara Tucker, Michelle Weeks and Atwork Entertainment.
Winner of the UKSC in 2006 with "Cant Get Enough" and 2007 with "Dont Wait 4 Me" - Andys music has been developing a solid fan base and has been brightening up the clubs and Radio Shows across Europe, the S and South America. Andy then forged another successful partnership by working on productions with the talented Neil Athale (Bryan McFadden, Gareth Gates, Booty Luv, Popstars) and this new partnership has been reaping the rewards of their hard work. His music had taken a much more commercial and funkier sound and this is the sound that has carried him through until today.
Andy has produced music in several styles from Trance to House and Hip Hop. Never sticking steadfastly to one stye, Andy is a producer who full believes in being active in more than one genre of music. In 2007 Andy produced and directed music video "Dont Wait 4 Me" by K-Loc and Tony R. This video and music received an award from the UKSC in 2007 and continues to receive TV and Radio Airplay in the UK, Australia, USA and Brazil. Andy has returned to his House roots after producing 3 Hip Hop tracks with K-Loc and is concentrating on promoting the “Breathe In EP” with Rowetta as well as new single “Laidback & Groovin” which is being well received around the clubs in 2008.
Andy had released most of his records on his own label Shivar but in 2006 signed tracks to Seqsoul Records a Dutch label and then the following year signed Breathe In to Reel House Records a UK label who have artists such as Stonebridge, Jocelyn Brown, Byron Stingily and Lenny Fontana on their books. This followed with signing “You Dont Know” and the “Breathe In EP” to UK label Musictracx Recordings. These tracks have been featured on the site and DJ charts in various places from Juno to DJ Download and Beatport.
In 2006 Andy moved to Brazil and set up a studio there - recording by the beach on an island in Espirito Santo. There he had a radio show on Musical FM, which incorporated the latest dance releases from Europe as well as interviews and reviews of DJs and Producers from around the world. Andy reviewed artists such as Chris Lake, Trentmoller, Antoine Clamaran, Bob Sinclair and Barbara Tucker on his weekly Saturday radio show.
[edit] Early Years
Born Andrew Craig in Paris, France 17th April 1978 Andy was adopted at the age of 3 and named Andrew Petrie Edgeler - however on turning 16 he changed his name back to his original name of birth. Andy has led an interesting and varied lifestyle and this is reflected in his work and his musical tastes. Originally growing up in Glasgow Andys family moved around a lot and he went from school to school in his childhood. Some changes from having to move and others due to his bad behaviour (Andy was suspended from 2 schools and expelled from 2). His obvious talents had made him bored at school and this often led to him playing truant or becoming embroiled in the lesser expected aspects of education.
Not a lot is known about Andy’s life as a child however at the age of 15 we know that Andy was expelled from school again and chose to leave to pursue other interests. It is widely reported that Andy had become a drug dealer at the school although this has never been proven. Come the tender age of 16 and Andy was in trouble with the Police ,an occurrence that would become more and more familiar as his years progressed. He was sent to prison at 16 for assaulting a key witness in his trial in the court room before the case - never a dull moment in his life. He had been accused of removing various musical instruments from his school to the value of over £100,000 and his co-accused - Ross Cadenhead had been somewhat happy to discuss this with the police. Andy's over enthusiasm for life had seen this as an injustice and therefore without the law to help him he took matters into his own hands. Although, we are sure that even he would admit that the court room directly before the trial was not the place to exact some retribution. So Andy was held on a petition warrent for Assault and Intimidating witnesses and sent to Saughton Prison (HMP Edinburgh) where he spent the next 4 and a half months on remand. Finally being released when he was sentenced to probation and communty service at trial.
Skip forward to 18 and again he found himself in prison after becoming involved in a life of crime, drugs, violence and car theft amongst others. This time was only for a month. He had become involved in a drug ring that went to nightclubs looking for dealers selling Ecstasy, Cocaine and Marijuana. There they would rob these dealers and then sell the drugs themselves. This happened time and time again until Andy and his team robbed a set of dealers who then came back with machetes and baseball bats to exact their revenge. Realising how dangerous this lifestyle had become Andy started to turn his interest to music and DJing and away from the seedy and dark side of the nightclubs.
Still with a strong zest for life and the club scene. Andy started to arrange parties in houses and flats after the clubs and realised that he had a skill in bringing people together and entertaining them in a good way. He arranged more and more and soon became a well known figure in Edinburgh’s club and after party circuit. The natural progression was for Andy to take up DJing and he started to play at these after parties before moving onto his first main event at Majestica.
Andys personal life calmed down over the years as he became a well respected DJ and Producer in his own right. However he did have one incident where it could be said that his past came back to haunt him. He was running a studio in Edinburgh in 2000 when one of his clients stole the keys and came back and tried to rob the studio. Andy was inside at the time and saw the man (Rakesh Ram - aka Peter) running away. Chasing him with his good friend John Maxwell - they caught up wth Rakesh at his flat and challenged and assaulted him. Unfortunately the trial was a travesty of justice - the Judge waived the Jury trial and believed all of the lies that Rakesh gave during the trial. This led to a conviction for Assault and Robbery for Andy - despite him being the one who was nearly robbed. This, coupled with another offence, and Andys previous convictions led to Andy being sentenced to 13 months in prison.
There were a lot of funny stories along the way in this rollercoaster life of his - from him outrunning 4 Police cars in a Vauxhall Corsa at 18, to out manoeuvering Police dogs in the ground chase. He is also credited for forcing the company of a well known spirit brand to change their bottle design - due to enormous amounts of the Liquor being returned to shops replaced with cold tea.
