[edit] Peace flag v peace symbol

The Peace flag was changed to the "CND" peace symbol by Stevertigo, beliveing the former to be a gay pride flag Stevertigo stated that "homosexuality and peace are quite different." and that, "Use of the gay flag is promoted by pro-War spoilers wanting to divide anti-War w[ith] irrelevant liberal causes". This argument is baced on a misunderstanding as the the flag in question is not the gay rights flag but a distinct flag happening also to have rainbow colours. The peace flag originated in Italy around 1961 and was inspired by similar multi-colored flags used in demonstrations against nuclear weapons.

As can be seen if one reads the article on Rainbow flags they have many distinct uses and meanings; from gay pride to forming part of the flag of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, from use by Thomas Muentzer the early Reformation-era German pastor to a common symbol of the Cooperative movement.

There are no symbols (to my knowldge) that have purely one meaning. The peace symbol that Stevertigo used to replace the flag orginated as a symbol for the anti-nuclear (rather then anti-war) group CND. It is also belived by conspircy theorists to be an ancient symbol designating hatred toward Christians, from Emperor Nero, who crucified the Apostle Peter on a cross upside-down. Nothing is perfect but the use of the flag with the Italian word "pace", meaning peace, gives the project a more internationist feeling wich is much needed as many of the articles currently are biased towards anglo/american information.--JK the unwise 08:46, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
