Talk:Antonio Smareglia

[edit] Date of Death
Note that in the Antonio Smareglia (1854-1929) Sveučilišna knjižnica u Puli, 2004 the short English note at the end gives the date as 14 April, but both the Croatian and Italian main text give it as 15 April.
[edit] Nationality
In 19th century Europe it is really a little difficult to establish someone like Smeraglia's nationality. Legally he was Austrian, Pola being inside the Austrian Empire, but so was Milan and Venice at the time, and who would call people born in Milan in 1854 Austrians? He himself had an Italian name, his operas are composed to Italian librettos and his father was Italian, so I think the category "Italian composers" applies here alright. The Croatians nowadays probably claim his as one of their own, because of his mother, but "Croatian composer" is a little beside the point, maybe.... Kraxler 19:48, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
