[edit] Notation
Could someone please add something to explain what z* means? Is it supposed to refer to the complex conjugate? If that's the case, then we're using 2 different ways of referring to the same concept in a single article. Gokul 07:42, Aug 28, 2004 (UTC)
- yeah, z* means complex conjugate. I prefer the z-bar notation, but I don't know how to write that in text mode, and the math mode is not recommended for inline text (argh). But you're right, this inconsistency is bad, and needs to be fixed. Let's decide on one notation. And maybe there is a text way to do the overbar without resorting to LaTeX? or maybe we should latex throughout? or maybe the asterisk throughout? -Lethe | Talk 08:28, Aug 28, 2004 (UTC)
I would vote for z-bar, even in in text.Tosha 03:54, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I have changed z* back to z̅ on account of the problems discussed here in this talk page.
- Well, that's not legible on my browser. Charles Matthews 18:43, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

- OK, well I prefer z-bar to z*, but if we can't use it because some people can't display unicode properly, then so be it. I still think consistency is important, as the inconsistent notation can cause confusion (as you see it has already). So anyone who wants to change it should change it across the whole article. Wouldn't you agree? -Lethe | Talk 19:06, Oct 16, 2004 (UTC)

- It doesn't even display properly. I prefer z-bar, but when it doesn't render... Dysprosia 23:02, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

- I will add a "Notes" section to this article, where the two different notations can be easily explained. DavidCBryant 14:16, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
