Antarmahal is an extremely bold attempt by rituparno ghosh in portraying the decadent self-corroding socio-cultural milieu of bengal in 19th century. Greed for power, money and status drove the self-proclaimed all-powerful land-lords to submerge in extraordinary levels of luxury and seduction. While the impotence of the lead character (the Italic textzamindar) is a bit cliched, Rupa ganguly succeeds to transcend cultural barriers with her bravura performance. Her performance as a neglected woman on biological clock, with mixed emotion towards the second queen is awe-inspiring.

The film relies on the sexual politics deep inside the landlord's house and has been shown in a manner which is unprecedented in Bengali as well as in Indian cinema. The gruesome aspect of non-consensual marital sexual congress has been shown in the most drastic form. The scenes of the presence of a priest in the bedroom during sexual congress to help the queen conceive is a poignant portrayal of such pain. The film goes on to derive sexual implications of building clay Goddess Idols ("Durga"), which is widely held as tantamounting to blasphemy. In addition to that, possibly for the first time in Indian cinema, instances of human-animal sex has been clearly explained in this film, and the consequences of the same have also been detailed out.

The ending scene is one of the most moving scenes in this movie where Soha Ali Khan's (the second queen) face is used in beautiful allegory to that of the goddess. With such excellent choice of cast the director succeeds in turning a morbid dark sexual drama into something worth remembering.
