Antonique Smith (born August 11) is an American singer and actress born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey. She is probably best known for her starring role as Mimi in Jonathan Larson's Broadway production of Rent. She was also the poster girl for RENT, displayed on taxi cabs in NYC and posters across the country.
Though most famous for her role on Broadway, Smith is actively pursuing a career in film and television. She had a small role in the Golden Globe nominated film "Across The Universe". Her television appearances include guest stints on Law & Order and 100 Centre Street. She is also the voice of Simone, the voice-automated IVR for Virgin Mobile USA.
Smith currently has a solo album in the works. She has performed at New York City nightclubs XL and The Cutting Room, co-owned by Chris Noth (Sex & The City, Law & Order).
Smith has benefited from such websites as YouTube and Myspace where videos of her performances have been posted by fans.
Her fans have expressed interest in her playing the role of Elphaba in Wicked, though she does not plan on auditioning, she says. Smith left the role of Mimi in the musical Rent on Broadway to record her album and expand her film career.
It has recently been confirmed that she will play Faith Evans in the film "Notorious". The film is based on the life of rapper Biggie Smalls.
