Antonio de Pereda (ca.1611-1678) was a Spanish Baroque era painter [1], best known for his still lifes. Pereda was born in Valladolid as the eldest of three brothers from an artistic family, his mother and father both being painters themselves. [2] He was educated in Madrid by Pedro de las Cuevas and was taken under the wing of the influential Giovanni Battista Crescenzi[3], but after Crescenzi's death in 1635 Pereda was expelled from politics and began to take commisions from religious institutions. [4] As well as still life and religious work, Pereda was known for historical paintings such as his Relief of Genoa (1635) which was painted for Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid as part of the same series as Velázquez's Surrender of Breda.
