Antonio Cubillo

Antonio Cubillo founded the Canary Islands Independence Movement in 1964. This Algiers-based group began a terrorist campaign against Spanish rule in 1976. Two years later, he was crippled in an assassination attempt ordered by the security forces of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. After the movement was disbanded in 1982 (following the creation of the Canary Islands Autonomous Community), he was granted a royal pardon and returned to Spain.
