Dr Anton Bitel (b. 1970) is a film critic[1], and an occasional tutor in Classics at the University of Oxford.
Born in Australia, Anton obtained a Master's degree and Doctorate from the University of Oxford. His doctorate (Classics) was concerned with ghost stories, adultery tales and the construction of identity in the Latin novel the Golden Ass by Apuleius.
He now lives in Oxford and continues to teach Ancient Greek and Latin to undergraduates there, but he has left full-time Academic work to become a film critic.
He prefers horror, 'arthouse', the avant garde and Oriental cinema, and any films that are macabre, 'challenging' or tawdry, but he has reviewed the gamut of genres, writing for Film4[2], Total Film, EyeForFilm[3], MusicOMH[4], Little White Lies, Film International and Movie Gazette, amongst others. In 2007 he was admitted as a member of the Online Film Critics Society[5].
