Anthony Taylor (born ? ) is an English football referee from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, who officiates in the Football League.

[edit] Career

Taylor started refereeing in the Northern Premier League in 2002,[1] progressing to officiate in the Conference North in 2004.[2] He was appointed to the Football League List at the start of season 2006-07, and his first match appointment was the 0–0 draw between Wrexham and Peterborough in a League Two encounter on August 12, 2006.[3]

On November 14, 2006, he was put in charge of an England Under-19 international friendly versus Switzerland at Gresty Road, home of Crewe Alexandra. England won 3–2.[4]

After a Football League Championship game between Hull City and Charlton Athletic on October 2, 2007,[5] he received considerable criticism from the managers of both teams over his handling of the game, which finished 1–2. During the game there were many disputed decisions, a disallowed goal and two sendings off, both of which were disputed by the team managers.[6]

On January 1, 2008, he took charge of the League One match between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town,[7] where he gave a contested 35th minute penalty award to the away side, at the same time sending off Forest's Kelvin Wilson "with a bizarre decision".[8]

Despite doubts being raised by the video replay of the incident, the appeal Nottingham Forest raised to the one match suspension was turned down by the Football Association.[9]
