Anthony Bolton

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony Bolton (born 7 March 1950) is one of the UK's best known investment fund managers and most successful investors, having managed the Fidelity Special Situations fund since 1979. Over this 27-year period the fund achieved annualised growth of 20.3%, far in excess of the 7.7% growth of the wider stock exchange. [1]

Educated at Cambridge University, Bolton left with a degree in engineering. He persued a career in the city where, age 29, he was recruited by Fidelity as one of their first London based investment managers. [2]

In November 1985, he also took on the management of the new Fidelity European Fund until December 2002. During his management the fund grew at an annualised 19.1%.

In 2006 his Special Situations Fund was split,[3] as the success of the fund had brought in so much money from investors, and had become the UK's largest fund, that it was feared that the fund was too big to manage successfully. The funds were split into UK and Global Special Situations funds, with the Global fund passed onto another manager and the UK fund continuing under Bolton's stewardship until his retirement at the end of 2007. [4]

With Bolton's retirement, many have questioned[5] whether the fund can continue to outperform the market in future. Anthony Bolton will be replaced by Sanjeev Shah as the manager of the UK Special Situations Fund in early 2008.

With Bolton's retirement, his former funds suffered amoungst the worst redemptions in 2007, with the Special Situations fund shedding £335m and Global Special Situations losing £508m.[6]

In his spare time he relaxes by writing music and cites Benjamin Britten as his biggest influence. He is a keen traveller and has a holiday home in Antigua[7]

He lives in Midhurst, West Sussex and has three children. [7]
