Anthony Berkeley Cox

Anthony Berkeley Cox (July 5, 1893 – March 9, 1971) was a British crime writer. He wrote under several names: Francis Iles, Anthony Berkeley, and A. Monmouth Platts. Berkeley was quite prominent amongst crime writers of his time (the Golden Age of Detective Fiction) and was closely associated with others in this field, including Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and G. K. Chesterton in the Detection Club.

Berkeley was born in Watford, England, and educated in Sherborne School and the University College of London. After serving in the army in World War I, Berkeley worked as a journalist for many years, contributing to such magazines as Punch and The Humorist. In 1938, he took up the post of reviewer for John O'London's Weekly and the Daily Telegraph, writing under his pen name Francis Illes. In the forties he wrote for the Sunday Times, and The Guardian from the mid-1950's through to 1970.
