[edit] Image:Bigwig.jpg

Hello. I see you've added this picture to the Bigwig (Watership Down) page. However, I don't think we can use it without some modification, for the following reasons:

  1. There is no detailed fair-use rationale. You will need to add one, since not to do so can be grounds for deletion. Instructions on how to do that are on the non-free use rationale guideline page.
  2. It's much too big. The fair-use guidelines specify that such pictures must be "web-resolution", and 960 × 536 is much too large for that; I'd say it should be no more than 400px along the longest side.
  3. Permission from a website (whether down or not) is irrelevant, since the copyright in a screenshot remains with the film-makers, since under copyright law it's a derivative work of the original. A fansite author has no authority to give permission on such things, no matter what they may think.

Sorry for all this, but to protect itself legally Wikipedia has to be strict about the use of fair-use material, so we can't just let informal stuff slide. Loganberry (Talk) 15:20, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for replying. I'm not an expert on fair use, but it seems to me that we would be able to justify a small screenshot, since it's not as if we can write to Bigwig and ask him to send a free photo! With a reduced size and a full rationale, my personal opinion is that we'd be fine. I'd recommend you move the image to the top right, though, since it looks a bit odd down the bottom, at least on my Firefox. And I did remember you once I'd looked through your contributions: I remember that spat over the long plot summary! =:P Loganberry (Talk) 01:45, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Hello again. I think the new image is fine, and I must compliment you on your detailed fair-use rationale. If everyone was as thorough, we'd have many fewer problems! Thank you. Oh, incidentally, could you please stick to calling me Loganberry on here? It's no secret who I am, of course, but it may confuse other readers if you use names other than my username. Thanks. [edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bigwig.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bigwig.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:14, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
