bsnes for Linux and Windows was started by byuu on October 14, 2004,[1] and a Mac OS X port was added by Richard Bannister[2] in 2005. It is currently in active development under a custom license.[3]

bsnes focuses on accuracy and clean code over speed or compatibility. Providing bus accurate processor emulation requires substantial overhead, so at least a Intel Core 2 is recommended to achieve full speed.[1]
