Ankoko Island is located at the confluence of the Cuyuni River and Wenamu River, at 6°43′N, 61°8′W, on the border between Guyana and Venezuela.

Venezuela, which claims a large part of western Guyana, occupied and annexed the Guyanese half of the island in 1966.
