Talk:Animal Forest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It was proposed that Animal Forest be renamed and moved to Dōbutsu no Mori. The result of the debate was no move. Read the archived discussion.

i've updated the page and excluded what i can't guarantee is true, having the game myself. if anyone wishes to re-edit then of course feel free. Kryss hon 11:28, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

I removed items which did not relate to the Nintendo 64 version seeing as there are other articles concerning the gamecube and ds versions.--Balloonguy 22:51, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

It should not be merged because all the other version have there own seperate articles

[edit] No longer a stub

Well, it's no longer a stub, though I'd like some better sources then the ones I provided so keep your eyes open.

This article currently covers three of the four Japanese versions of Animal Crossing. This article now covers Dōbutsu no Mori, Dōbutsu no Mori + and Dōbutsu no Mori e+, which means it covers both Nintendo 64 and GameCube.

This article does not cover Oideyo Dōbutsu no Mori, the DS version of the game, the Wild World equivalent. The only article for this is the Wild World article, which mentions it in the first line, but doesn't allude to it anywhere else.

Let me know what you think.TStein 15:28, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] reverted dobutsu no more back to animal forest

Decisions like what the title of this article should be and where it is going to be located and how wikipedia is going to refer to the Japanese versions of these games are not decisions made by one person. I have reverted the edits on both this and the Animal Crossing Template and I've requested that an administrator move this back to the Animal Forest page while a change in terminology and location can be discussed.

Please also keep in mind that this is in fact English Wikipedia and that that does take some precedence. TStein 08:00, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dōbutsu no Mori v. Animal Crossing

When I say see talk page, I mean see talk page, not revert edit because you think you're correct.

Don't change the name of article when there is likely to be contention without discussion, especially when that means changing how this game is referred to on wikipedia. No change is going to take place until discussion does and so far I see no one on this talk page but me.

Now, in re the discussion that has occured via edit summaries.

Yes, Animal Forest is not the technical name of the game. Neither is Dōbutsu no Mori, it's a transliteration for the actual Japanese. So the arguement is between an accepted translation and an accepted transliteration. The actual name of the game is not a contender.

Thoughts to keep in mind? This is Wiki English, think about who it caters to. I have no problem with the article mentioning that Animal Forest is a translation, but are people going to come to Wikipedia looking for "Animal Forest" or for "Dōbutsu no Mori"?? That's the first issue. And, a major part of that is the second issue--how this game is referred to in the gaming community. People know the name Dōbutsu no Mori, but there are multiple incorrect spellings, the most common of which are leaving off the accent on the o and an ou somewhere in "Dōbutsu", and for the most part, the game is referred to as "Animal Forest", and it will most likely continue to be referred to as "Animal Forest" in the games. I think that trying to enforce this change goes against not only the other wiki Animal Crossing articles, but I think it goes against the terminology used in the gaming community. Using the name that is least often used doesn't make much sense and isn't very encylopedic. That's my two cents anyway. But I'm open to discussion.

I'm not open to wild editing. Neither my opinion nor anyone elses is law on this article, and discussion is going to open (that means actually commenting here) and close before any change is made to any of the AC articles. TStein 09:15, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Simply have Animal Forest serve as a redirect. Official naming (or transliteration in this instance) takes precedence over fan perception and recognition. Combination 01:58, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
I proposed the move. I'll put my two cents in on the discussion page. TStein 11:27, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

If we are still voting, I vote for the name to show as Animal Forest. Trinidadiv 21:05, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dōbutsu no Mori source

I'm fairly positive that the transliteration had to come from Nintendo, and I'm pretty sure (given the wide spread useage) that this is the correct transliteration. But I can't find a source. I can't even find a transliteration source for Oideyo Dōbutsu no Mori or a transliteration source for the film. I need some help for this one. If you find a source for the transliteration for the others, link to it here (in the talk page) so we know something at least, if you find a source for the transliteration for this game, put it in the article! TStein 23:52, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

The first five characters どうぶつの are hiragana, read do-u-bu-tsu-no, meaning "pertaining to animals". (In hiragana, ō is commonly written as if it were ou.) The last character 森 is a kanji containing three "tree" symbols, meaning "forest", and read as mori in the Japanese title of Wario's Woods (ワリオの森, Wario no Mori). The "Oideyo" part appears to be part of the title of the DS game, which should be discussed in Talk:ACWW if anywhere. --Damian Yerrick () 05:00, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Ah yes, "Oideyo" is part of the AC:WW transliteration. The reason I asked for a source for the transliteration is I've seen several translations on the web and in gaming articles, the two most common being "Dōbutsu no Mori" and "Doubutsu no Mori". I couldn't find an official Nintendo article that used a transliteration, or any official article that used a transliteration. Given how prevelant the "Dōbutsu" transliteration is followed by the "Doubutsu" transliteration, I figured that it was most likely accurate. But I had no way of checking myself, or finding a source to back me up and I had no way of knowing how we'd chosen among transliterations. I don't quite get the whole "ō" v. "ou" thing (though I'm figuring that if you're wrong someone else will point it out) and it would be nice if we had a source, but this is good enough for me. TStein 13:11, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RFC

Hey...we only have the input of three people at Talk:Dōbutsu no Mori (film)#Requested move and I'd realy like more. Since this article is closely related your opinions would be welcome. Miss Mondegreen | Talk   20:14, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Somebody merged this with AC (GCN) article

They did not say anything about it before doing it and I looked at their profile and it looks they have been in trouble numerous times at Wikipedia and is almost banned from it. As I said in that article's discussion, Animal Forest should have it's own article.--StormCommander 18:14, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Animal Forest needs article or section

If Animal Forest is not to be given its own article again, then shouldn't it at least have a section in the Animal Crossing page detailing differences between the two games? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.34.43.18 (talk) 21:11, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
