The Animex International Festival of Animation and Computer Games takes place every year in the towns of Middlesbrough, Gateshead & Stockton-on-Tees in the North East of England. The festival has its roots firmly planted in the creative side of the games and animation business and acts to provide animators, directors, students, artists, designers, writers and educators with a forum in which they can share their knowledge and skills and promote the art of animation and computer games.
Animex began as a two-day series of lectures by animators at the University of Teesside in February 2000, and has rapidly grown to a week-long festival incorporating the two day event Animex Game held at the end of January with simultaneous events in a variety of locations. Locations include ARC at Stockton-on-Tees, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art at Gateshead, Cineworld Cinema in Middlesbrough, the Riverside Stadium, and local schools.
The festival is composed of a number of different events, such as the Animex Student Animation Awards, which takes entries from around the world, Animex Game, Animex Lounge and Animex Talk!, which offer people the chance to meet industry luminaries, and Animex Street and Animex Town, which involve people from the local region.
Guest speakers in the past have included such industry professionals as Pixar animator Mark Walsh, Bob the Builder designer Curtis Jobling Owner of Ritual Entertainment Richard Levelord Gray, Blitz Games, Ernest Adams, Chris Crawford and Professor Stuart Sumida.
