Dr. Anil Wilson had his school education from the Irish Brothers at the St. Edward’s School, Shimla. He graduated in Science with additional English from the Punjab University. His post- graduation in English Literature was from the Centre for Post Graduate Studies at Shimla. Immediately after his post graduation he was selected by the Public Service Commission to work in the lecturer cadre in Colleges in Himachal Pradesh. During his early years as lecturer he went on to obtain the M.Phil and the Ph.D degrees.
In January 1991 he was selected to head St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Wilson was the eleventh Principal of the prestigious institute and the first to have been appointed without prior teaching experience at the college. Throughout his tenure as Principal, however, he continued to serve as a lecturer in English to all three years of the undergraduate honours programme. In 1996 he was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor of the Himachal Pradesh University where he also officiated as the Vice Chancellor, but before he could complete his term there he was recalled by the St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He served St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, Delhi as principal from 1991-2007. He has been given a large number of awards by various organizations and bodies. Prominent among them are the Beresford Hope Award which he received in 1984 from the St. Augustine’s Foundation, England; the highly prestigious Soka University Award of Highest Honour bestowed on him in 1992 at a special investiture ceremony held in Tokyo, Japan; In 1999 he was given the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for outstanding achievements and contribution to education and in 2001 he was honoured by the Distinguished Educationist Award.
He has been associated in academic and administrative capacities with a number of universities and colleges abroad including the University of the Philippines, the Macao University, the Christ Church College Canterbury, the University of California at Berkeley and the Westcott House Cambridge, U.K.. He has participated in conferences and symposia at a number of universities abroad including the Brown University, USA, Soka University Japan, the University of Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur, the University of Macao, the Thammasat University in Bangkok, etc. He is one of the Founder Members of the SRG Medical College in Mauritius.
He is a member of number of national boards and committees. He was nominated by the President of India to the Executive Committee of the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong and is the nominee of the Governor of Jharkhand on the Executive Council of the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi. He has served on the Executive Council of the University of Delhi. He was a member of the SAARC committee on Cultural Activities and a Trustee of the Muhammad Abdus Salam Foundation, London. He is on the advisory panel of a large number of educational organisations as well as State Board for Higher Education of Madhya Pradesh and the State Advisory Board of Higher Education Himachal Pradesh. He has served on the Senate of the Serampore University and serves (or has served) on the Governing Bodies / Management Committees of over half a dozen prominent Colleges in India (including the St. John’s College, Agra, The Ewing College Allahabad, the Hislop College Nagpur, the Wilson College Bombay, the Christian Medical College Ludhiana, the Baring College Batala) as well as an equal number of eminent schools all over the country (including the Bishop Cotton School Shimla, Kodaikanal International School, Kodaikanal, the Sri Ram School, Delhi, The Modern School, New Delhi, the Welham Boys School, Dehradun, The Wynberg Allen School, Mussourie, the Mayo College, Ajmer, Auckland House School Shimla). He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.
