Anhangüera

Anhangüera originates from a word in Tupi-Guarani language which was the nickname given by Brazilian Indians to an explorer and "bandeirante", Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva (1672-1740). It means "old devil" or "malignant spirit", because he impressed the Indians with tricks of setting fire to a plate full of sugarcane brandy (cachaça).
It has been used to name several things in Brazil:
- Anhanguera, Goiás, a municipality in the state of Goiás
- Anhangüera Educacional S.A., a higher education private holding company located in Valinhos, state of São Paulo [1]
- Anhangüera Peak, a mountain in the Parque Nacional da Floresta da Tijuca, part of Serra do Mar in the city of Rio de Janeiro
- Anhanguera (pterosaur), a pterosaur which was discovered in the city of the same name
- Colégio Anhangüera, a secondary school in Goiania [2]
- Parque Anhangüera, a municipal park in the city of São Paulo [3]
- Rede Anhangüera de Comunicação (RAC), a mass communication company from Campinas [4]
- Rodovia Anhangüera, a highway in the state of São Paulo
- TV Anhangüera, a private TV station in Goiania [5]
