Re: Bots with AWB
Well, it's not so much a clone you could run, as it's simply AWB with certain settings to make it do certain things. All you need to do what I am doing is a new account (for the bot), then you need to get permission here, and then just set up the bot with the settings you need to make edits such as subst:'ing, which is simple find and replace. Thanks, — FireFox 16:10, 08 July '06
- It's not that complicated. And yes, I run it on the same computer as I am editing on now, both accounts can run at the same time. — FireFox 16:17, 08 July '06
AP.Bot - userboxes
AP,
Given this edit, [1] and others like it, I'd like to know if you are ignoring links. I consider such a "repair" incomplete, since it will leave a red link as soon as Cyde deletes the original template. Rfrisbietalk 14:47, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know what you mean. Do you intend to finish the job or not? Rfrisbietalk 15:05, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
You wrote
No, the ignore box isn't ticked. I have User jedi under the Find column.--Andeh 15:03, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean either. :S --Andeh 15:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Do you intend to modify your bot so that it empties "What links here"? That means transclusions and links.
Please reply on this page. Rfrisbietalk 15:18, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, but AWB skips pages where it doesn't replace anything, for whatever reason.--Andeh 15:20, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
All you have to do is add more find and replace criteria something like these. I don't add brackets for more hits, but you might want to add them to a bot for fewer false positives.
Find | Replace |
---|---|
tl|User <n> | User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> |
Template:User <n> | User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> |
User <n> | User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> |
|<n> | |:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> |
| <n> | | :Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> |
Rfrisbietalk 15:28, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Ah, OK. That is the reason why I have the account on trial. I will keep that table for refences.--Andeh 15:33, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- Cool. It took me a few hundred tries (and messages from others) to work those out. Keep up the good work!
Rfrisbietalk 15:36, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- Are you sure the table is correct? top looks wrong, shouldn't it be User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> instead of User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n>?--Andeh 15:38, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- No, that actually works, but it really wouldn't change anything to include the curly brackets on both sides. You'll just replace something that's already there, e.g.,
- tl|User <n> → User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/<n> works like
- User <n> →
- Rfrisbietalk 15:47, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- p.s. More to your point actually, the "" and "" make the original blue link keep working. Rfrisbietalk 15:52, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not convinced all those replacement rules are 100% safe. If someone has very similar text then that'll probably get replaced too.--Andeh 16:04, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- That's why I suggested you include curly brackets for a bot. Your biggest problem probably will be to get the Babel box links that use pipes while ignoring regular link pipes. At the very least, please add the standard directory fix,
- User <n> → so that all the userspace directories are updated properly. Thanks. Rfrisbietalk 16:19, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I see you still haven't made the adjustment. [2] Please fix ... Rfrisbietalk 16:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

User:AP.BOT request
Could you set it to where this bot's edits are set as minor edits so I can bypass them while doing RC patrol. It gets, no offense, annoying to see them while trying to spot vandalism. Thanks! — The Future 01:06, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

If you're going to mess up my userboxes...
Hi there - your lovely bot dropped by my page and has done something odd with a couple of my userboxes. Now...I am only an occasional wikipedian, but I chose those boxes to reflect my own personal twist here. Now they are, well...useless. Please either restore them or tell me (in detail, I have NO programming knowledge) how to do it myself. Thank you. Risker 04:37, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting things out! Risker 19:56, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

- To fix that complaint, can you flag all these as minor? As for flagging them as automated bot, how fast will your bot need to edit to keep up with it's tasks? (If it's more than 2-3/min we should flag it.) Thanks, — xaosflux Talk 16:31, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
about your AP.bot
i just have to say, please stay off my page with that bot -.-
i just have a pet peeve of keeping everything as neat as possible, and your bot messed up my page's history with the overly-long comments for each of the edits it made...
maybe if you can just program it so that the comments are as short as possible, and doesn't have to be so detailed...
just my 2cents, cause i'm sure there are other ppl who'd be unhappy with their page if your bot decided to change something.... LG-犬夜叉 17:19, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- thanks for the reply...well, it took me a while just to find the right boxes and i found them on a specific page that lists them alongside their codes, so i had no idea where the boxes originally come from.
- anyways, i guess you meant no harm at all =/ o well LG-犬夜叉 17:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

- I just read the German Solution page...i see what's going on, no wonder, kk then, it's not a problem =] LG-犬夜叉 17:31, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

AP.Bot Request
Andy, the College Football project recently GUS'd all the NCAA userboxes into my userspace. When you get the chance, can you get your bot on bypassing the redirects? All the boxes used to start with "NCAA" and now start with "User:Z4ns4tsu/Userboxes/NCAA" as far as I know. If it makes a difference, some of them do have options and things as well. Let me know if you need more info or have any questions. Thanks! z4ns4tsu\talk 18:59, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
I'll do it, that's fine by me. I hadn't noticed the redirect edit before. z4ns4tsu\talk 19:17, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Ok, nevermind, I'm apparently clueless as to what's been going on with these boxes. If Cide could look into it, I know he has a lot more experience with this than I do. z4ns4tsu\talk 19:22, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Bot work
Can we get the bot to do something about removing the templates from user pages of userboxes that were deleted? —Centrx→talk • 15:52, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- I have been going through old deletedpages, and one way would be to put them in a category that the bot goes through and removes items whereever they are transcluded. —Centrx→talk • 15:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
User:DumbBOT/TimeSortedPD (there are also others at Wikipedia:Protected deleted pages). —Centrx→talk • 16:07, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Userbox migration, thank you again
I see why your wikistress is up, too bad some people don't understand the Userbox migrations and why your bot is helping by fixing them, I guess they rather see the left boxPer the Userbox migration, User Astronomy was moved to |
This user is interested in astronomy. |
, thank you again --Sirex98 18:31, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Well of course, until the BOT went and b*gg*red things up by replacing the original boxes, people weren't seeing the left box! Although I see the point of migrating boxes in the general space across to userspace (esp. where they are very specific or esoteric), you can hardly blame people who had perfectly ok boxes before, that now have the mess as seen on the left. That's like blaming the guy who parks his car on a road with no lines for the fine he gets when the roadworkers come and paint lines under his wheels while he's away... ;) - HTUK 20:32, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Userbox migration scope
Hey, thanks for trying to help, but I really don't think the userbox migration is supposed to migrate all userboxes - only the controversial POV ones. Things like the above astronomy interest userbox are helpful to the project and should be encouraged (i.e. they should remain in Template space). I posted something about this at Wikipedia talk:German userbox solution#Scope_of_page. If you don't agree, please still stop moving boxes while this is cleared up. —AySz88\^-^ 20:15, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- Comment:Some of the userboxes have already migrated, the bot is only fixing them by linking where the userboxes Templates migrated to, I agree that non controversial userboxes shouldn't be moved, but I think you complaning to the wrong person. --Sirex98 20:46, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Just so you know, GUS has moved to WP:UM (the Userbox migration). Just so you know. -Royalguard11(Talk•Desk) 21:10, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I did notice that from someone elses edit summary (might've been you), will starting using it soon as it's less characters. Thanks for the reminder.--Andeh 21:12, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for thinking you were the one who was migrating the boxes. (The fact that someone migrated a box and left the task of changing the links to someone else is even more of an annoyance.) However, the snipplets you cited on my talk page don't seem to contradict the fact that the migration on the English Wikipedia is not supposed to migrate all userboxes; the first one is part of Jimbos' paraphrase of something said by someone else (i.e. he's not suggesting it), and the second one is just a little bit of explanation of how the Germans did it. The section under that clarifies the issue: "Examples [of boxes that should be kept in Template space] include those related to claiming professional or academic expertise, WikiProject affiliations, and claiming access to specialized resources and a willingness to conduct research using them upon request. Templates for these userboxes could stay in template or project space. Controversial and unencyclopedic userbox templates should be moved to user space." This list of examples doesn't explicitly say anything like "browser" or the such, but I think it's fairly obvious that, if one takes them in good faith, they lie within the general idea of "useful information about the user".
- I will try to find the correct person to direct this towards. —AySz88\^-^ 03:11, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Andy, Is there any way of keeping your bot away from my pages please? It's done one subst tidyup pass and I'm just wondering will it do another? I'm currently working on a complete harmonisation of all the user page template and warnings, so need to list them without the subst, and it'd be a pain in the proverbial to noinclude all of them.
