From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drawball is a website that hosts a large circular image onto which visitors can draw using a limited quantity of virtual ink. In addition to individuals' small-scale drawings, large virtual communities have collaborated to form larger images or logos. Drawball has become a battleground for image prominence, as users contribute to their own images or vandalize those of others.
[edit] Drawing
To draw on the Drawball, one must first zoom in to the maximum depth, then select a color and pen size. There are six different pen sizes and a color selection tool. Drawball requires users to complete a simple Eulerian path puzzle before drawing, to help prevent use of macros.
All new users begin with 15% ink, which slowly regenerates. Drawball identifies users by IP address to enforce its ink rationing system. If the site operator finds a particular drawing with good quality, the drawing is protected from vandalism, and the artist who drew it may be rewarded with unlimited ink.
A Drawball operator may also add an image to the "hall of fame" page, which includes the final product as well as a time-lapse history of the drawing. Many of these histories provide good examples of how drawings are vandalized and rebuilt as they progress. Currently, areas of the Drawball continue to be protected, but the hall of fame is rarely updated.
[edit] South Korean flag
In January and February 2006, a large South Korean flag was constructed on the Drawball by members of several Internet forums (or many South Korean people). The flag was constantly expanded and repaired, and as the first of many logos to come, it was quite noticeable from the ball.
Members of various communities colluded to vandalize the Korean flag. On February 27, 2006, the flag was turned almost entirely neon green. It was because of this large attack that Drawball gained its current presence. The website became so flooded that hundreds of people at a time were put in queue before being able to access the Drawball. After extensive attack, the center of the flag was eventually converted into a Pepsi logo, and, like all Drawball drawings, the space was eventually reclaimed by other users.
