[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
Signed...

[edit] Deny recognition poll

(Note that this is a form notification.)

Hello Andrevan. Since you commented on the Deny recognition proposal, this is to notify you that a formal poll has been opened concerning it. If it is accepted, it will be be used as a launching pad to amend other policies such as the deletion policy; that page itself will be marked as historical, not policy. Feel free to reread the proposal and place your vote. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 07:20, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mediation Committee Business

Dear Fellow Mediators:

I'm writing to all mediators listed as active to point out several emergent issues that require the immediate attention of all active mediators. The Committee has come to a place where we can neither provide the function we were created to provide (timely formal mediaton for the English Wikipedia community) nor correct matters to be able to provide that function. In specific, we cannot perform any mediations, because most mediators are no longer taking cases, and we cannot add new mediators, because mediators are no longer responding to requests to join the Committee. I am in a place where I continually accept new cases for the committee, only to see them go stale after several months because there is no mediator willing to take it, and where I deny candidates a place on the committee because no mediator will speak up in support of them. I ask that all mediators take ten minutes to look over the following matters:

I beg, beseech, and pray each Mediator to please take a few moments to at the very least comment on the five candidates, and to consider taking one of the open cases. We are at a place where we are literally relying on the kindness of strangers: Almost all cases are being taken by non-Commitee volunteers at this point. Putting the open tasks page (which only changes when we add a new case), and the main committee page on your watchlist so you will know when new nominations and cases are added, would go a long way to helping the Committee succeed. (If having the main page pop up on your watchlist every time someone else comments in a nomination is too annoying, I can move them to subpages like RFA, so that the page will only change when a new nomination is added.)

Additionally, I ask that all mediators check that they have a current email address subscribed to the Mediation Committee mailing list, mediation-l, to avoid the need for future talk page messages of this sort.

My apologies for having to air the committee's dirty laundry in this manner, but I fear it is the only way to get everyone together to bring the Committee back to life. For the convenience of those who simply cannot be involved due to time constraints, I will be listing those that do not participate in any Committee activities as mediators emeriti, so that we have a clearer picture of who exactly we have available to take cases. I am, by separate posting, asking all mediators emeriti to return to actively participating in the requests to join the commmittee.

Yours respectfully, Essjay (TalkConnect) 02:26, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where's the brain?

Wow. Intense. Why do people keep messin' with my article? As an admin, I urge you to do something about it. Harryfronman 01:38, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where's the superman?

Can you just make something up, saying that it is verifiable through some loophole in the system? Because, well, it is true... And these people are obsessed! i mean, it's like they have nothing better to do than to ruin this article about some family lore that also has to do with superman. Harryfronman 16:02, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] hi

pictures? What about just publishing the exact same thing on a blog somewhere, and citing that? I could do that. Or you could just ban people who mess with the article, or threaten to ban them, with all of your authority and everything...

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Miyamoto.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Miyamoto.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Lord Falcon 17:31, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help with the LGBT comic book characters category

I hope you can help me if this applies to your jurisdiction and expertise, if not could you refer it to someone more appropriate? Starting today, a user began removing characters from the LGBT comic book characters. In some cases, he did so contrary to sources listed on the article, the article itself, and the talk page discussions. I began reverting his edits and left him a message on his talk page regarding the issue. You can see for yourself here. He threatened to initiate a review of the category. He accused me of spamming my page. He then accused me of altering entries to suit the categorization. This part particularly concerns me, I quote from him:

Well what's interesting about that history in the case of Jenny Sparks, Hooded Justice and Captain Metropolis is that it was inserted by you. That's all the proof I need to bring that Cat up for review. You skewed the character histories using undocumented speculation. So the revert war is over, i'll just put your category and the pages in it up for moderator review.--Basique 23:55, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

As I pointed out in my reply, I never touched the biography of either of those three characters. The only one I edited prior to today was the Jenny Sparks entry and that was to make her name fit alphabetically in two categories unrelated to the dispute. I also pointed out I was not the one who originally put any of those three in the LGBT category, I only reverted his edits to them. The LGBT comic book characters category, although I find it very useful and have done a lot of work with it, is however, not my own creation. I wouldn't want to see it deleted because of unfounded accusations pointed towards me. Is it possible that could happen though? I'd hate to ruin someone else's work just because I reverted some deletions. Perceive 00:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I need an advocate

I need an advocate to help walk me through the process of mediation and get more editors involved in an article.

I independently "discovered" Hugh Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. This is why I have so much interest in this Wikipedia article. Hugh Everett's theory has important ramifications. It leads to Stephen Hawking's No Boundary Proposal and Max Tegmark's All Universe Hypothesis. And these theories tell us what happened before the big bang. They justify the anthropic principle, which in turn answers the question why our universe appears like it has a creator. Finally, it implies that our universe is governed by Laplace determinism.

If Hugh Everett's Many Worlds is true, the paradox of wave-particle duality evaporates, Schrodinger's cat paradox evaporates, Einstein's main objections to Quantum Mechanics evaporate, and this is just for starters. If Hugh Everett's theory is true, Quantum Mechanics becomes an ordinary deterministic theory like every other theory in physics.

So, if you care about truth, if you are interested in understanding the universe, if you care to know man's place in the universe, if you care to know God's place in the universe, you need to understand Hugh Everett's Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.

Hello I am looking for an advocate to assist me in posting a new entry. I have found the wikipedia police to be insulting and thoughtless in their deletion of articles that many think of use and important. Specifically, i am trying to post an entry for the company mego inc. Mego inc has suffered from confusion with a company that does have an entry on the wikipedia site mego corporation. mego inc is launching a patent pending tool for users of social networking sites and will be an important addition to the web 2.0 space. Can you help me? thanks

[edit] Get Out!

If you dislike America so much then you should leave. I know a perfect place for you--Iraq. I would love to see you there as an insurgent and would be happy to help you appreciate how great you have it here in America--

A Soldier fighting for your rights to live in MY country and complain about it!!

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

An image or media file that you uploaded, Image:Miyamoto.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. [edit] complaint about a page.

dear sir,

I think the following webpage shouldn't exist in the first place.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_China_administrative_divisions_by_GDP_per_capita

This topic always cause bitter feeling among the oppressed Chinese. The big cities in China have taken advantages of remote poor rural area for decades. This always cause a lot of hot debates in Chinese forum. For examples:

http://www.rolia.net/forum/forum_listSingleThread.php?pno=3039567

This kinds of hot debats is frequently encountered in Chinese forums.

This is some data source: http://www.rolia.net/forum/forum_showPost.php?tno=371294&pno=3039516&

Or google: p://www.google.ca/search?num=30&hl=en&newwindow=1&q=2005%E5%B9%B4%E5%85%A8%E5%9B%BD%E5%9F%8E%E5%B8%82%E4%BA%BA%E5%9D%87GDP%E6%8E%92%E5%90%8D&meta=lr%3Dlang_zh-CN%7Clang_zh-TW%7Clang_en

The fact is that none of the data is real because statistics in China is generally a tool to deceive the poor people there.

I just want to add some comments to warn the people how to treat the data.

And I think wiki should not be a place for people to obtain political or reginal interest by playing some data games.

A region's successfulness is depend on how much money is invested. How much is produced. How the environment is affected. Without comprehensive investigation, only GDP which means how many times money is paid is nothing.

Thank you.

[edit] Mmx is getting to be a real problem

Is there any way to put a muzzle on MMx? He says that he has the right to revert any uncited citations, yet he refuses to recognize any citation, and misinterprets the one citation he has to support his position. Jane's Defence publications, Flight International and Aviation Week are all the most highly regarded research publications, yet Mmx has evidently never read even one paper or broadcast book, program or article on the topic he claims to be an expert in.

Every magazine and book on the F-14, and I've even posted a 1969 Flight magazine article to prove it on the F-14 article page, says the F-14 is an air superiority fighter designed to maneuver. Mmx1 makes it quite impossible to fix on any page he chooses to guard, current Air superiority fighter.

We currently have a request for mediation for F-14, but he has switched to owning Air superiority fighter, as it appears I have too many citations for him to ruin the F-14 page again. How do I fix the mediation request to include one or both pages? Mmx has also tossed a request to delete into two other articles which refer to the F-111, which refers to the F-14 page, something I regard as malicious vandalism as it is tantamount to putting a "please take out garbage" sticker on something you want to keep. Help!!!! --matador300 01:22, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

This is a content dispute as you can see on Talk:F-14 Tomcat, and there are some eyebrows being raised by this user's edits. I have stopped edit warring to allow wiki processes to take place, it is not tacit assent to his edits, hopefully with the end of the American holiday things will move forward. There is a Request for Mediation filed, but matador300/Wiarthurhu rewrote it from a content dispute into a personal attack on me [1]. I understand wiki moves slowly but could we at least get a moratorium on further edits until the issue is settled? How long should I expect to wait before pushing this up to requests for arbitration? --Mmx1 16:23, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help with a user requested

Hi! I've had a run in with 66.69.219.9 (talk · contribs) today. I've noticed that you have blocked this user in the past (block log), and there is history of edit warring, original research, POV and incivility. This user has been adding to a number of articles information that the Aramaic word haimānuthā, meaning 'faith', is related to the Greek word hymnos, meaning a 'song of praise' or 'hymn'. Actually there is no connexion apart from the fact that they sound a little alike. The user points to their partial phonetic coincidence as 'proof' that they must be linked, and then quotes Matthew 6.30 from the Peshitta as documented evidence for this. All that Bible verse says is 'You of litte faith'. Naturally, the Peshitta uses the word haimānuthā for 'faith'. This does not prove anything. I have quoted to the user dictionary entries on both words that disprove a link, but the user continues, and has started to get offensive. I am involved in Aramaic research and know this to be nonsense. ALthough I'm an admin, it would be incorrect to enforce my own views with a block. Can you please look into this? Thanks. — Gareth Hughes 22:51, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help stem the tide of rumor, misinformation and potential libel, please

Article Patrick Volkerding continues to sport sticky misinformation and rumor regarding a health issue allegedly experienced by PV two years ago. There series of edits of the past few hours should illustrate the stubbornness of certain users who insist on maintaining an allegation of a "bacterial infection" and an alleged trip to the "Mayo Clinic" -- neither of which seem to be verifiable dispite links that purport to be sources (but which, upon inspection, are not). My concerns are illustrated in the talk page of that article. The opposing editor doesn't seem to understand what a "verifiable source" is. Thanks for your help... I'm going to take a break. Whereas this is potentially a case of libel (posting false health information and claims regarding an individual) I believe it demands some authoritative attention. Thanks! Zosodada
