SubArm is a British rap rock band formed in Great Torrington, Devon in April 2007.[1] The band is made up of vocalist MB (who replaced JC in February 2008), guitarist and backing vocalist TG, bassist and backing vocalist HB, and drummer MB-R. They are noted for their fusion of hip-hop and heavy metal, reminiscent of their main influence, Rage Against the Machine.

The band released a four-track self-titled demo on May 27, 2007 and an eight-track EP is due for release on July 11, 2008. A DVD documenting their battle of the bands-winning gig at The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington was slated for production, though it was never completed and the idea was abandoned.

[edit] History

The origin of the band can be traced back to September 2006, when schoolmates TG, MB-R and JC were first in a band called Owned, with bass guitarist and vocalist AP and rhythm guitarist PC. When PC left in November, the band changed their name to Beat the System and began covering Rage Against the Machine's "Bullet in the Head". This band was extremely short-lived, and resulted in JC and MB-R leaving in early December. After Christmas, TG and AP Carried on as an acoustic duo, covering songs such as "Going to California" (Led Zeppelin), "Layla" (Eric Clapton) and "Nothing Else Matters" (Metallica). They did this until approximately February, when TG decided to join MB-R and JC in their new band.

In March of the year, HB was recruited as bass guitarist, and in April, the band was named SubArm and the group was made official. They began covering and writing a few songs, before they recorded and released their self-titled demo in May. The band then played a stream of gigs, winning the Torrington and Okehampton 'battle of the bands' competitions and coming second in the North Devon one in the process. The band were also interviewed by the BBC as part of their "Demos" feature,[2] and the North Devon Journal had referred to them as "a real toure de force, one to watch for the future."

On February 25, 2008, SubArm announced that they had hired a new vocalist in MB. They also announced their plans for a five/six-track EP, which they scheduled for late May. Guitarist TG has confirmed that the EP won't be self-titled, and it will contain eight songs, four of which are brand new. On April 23 it was announced on the band's MySpace that the EP would not be released until June, later pushed back even further to July. The first new track from the EP - "GD" - was released on the band's MySpace page on June 1, followed by the new version of "WWWTW" the next day and "POT" on June 4. The EP launch party is currently scheduled for July 11.

[edit] Influences

SubArm have listed the following influences on their MySpace page:

The band are evidently similar to RATM, with their political lyrics, heavy metal instrumentation and hip-hop vocals, and in the past they have covered two songs by their idols: "Killing in the Name"[3] and "Bullet in the Head".[4]
