[edit] notability

And this bloke is notable because.....?

My sentiments exactly. Let's let the community decide via an AfD. Badgerpatrol 13:07, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Afd closing

From my talk page:

Hallo Mikkalai- Can you explain your reasoning a bit further re your decision in closing the AfD debate on Andre Walker? Only five contributors were involved in the discussion, two established editors who both !voted to delete, one other who voted to keep, and then one keep (the anon) who has precisely 5 edits (all to either Andre Walker or the AfD itself) and one other keep from an editor who has 16 edits, all to either his userpage, Dominic Walker, Andre Walker, or related AfDs. Can you explain how Andre Walker meets WP:BIO, or otherwise why you decided to interpret the debate the way you did? I would say that the very least that should have been done was relisting to encourage more contributors., but I would like to hear your explanation in case my understanding is flawed. Thanks for your time, Badgerpatrol 09:57, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
First of all, WP:BIO is a guideline, while it covers some occupations in great detail, it is still must be applied with common sense. In wikipedia there are two major flavors of notability: whether something is important to civilization and whether something is in the eyes/ears/fingertips of many people. Plus the notability must be confirmed from reliable sources. A presenter, especially at such media outlet as BBC, is clearly in the view of broad public.
Finally, as you may have noticed, the debate was closed as "no consensus": 2 vs 2. Both sides presented arguments, which are reasonable, i.e., I, as a closing admin, cannot dismiss them on sight. `'mikka 15:56, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your response, Mikkalai. Can you provide a source that Walker is a presenter on the BBC? It isn't mentioned in the article and I have never heard of this. He is a presenter on *QVC*, which is a cable shopping channel selling mainly cheap jewellery and household appliances. Badgerpatrol 16:42, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, colleague, it was not my job of afd closer to check the validity of the article; I have to consider the arguments presented during afd. Checking the article itself would mean my voting. The BBC-related phrase was supplied with an external link. I supposed you know by now how to question or correct the actual content of an article. `'mikka 17:34, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I see my error now: I erroneously stated here he was BBC presenter. He was not: he only participated in BBC shows. Still, afd voters expressed opinion he has sufficient media appearance. I don't deny your right to disagree here. `'mikka 18:10, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
OK, well it's an honest mistake. I can't help but think that the fact that you thought he was a BBC presenter significantly impacted upon your thinking when closing, which is unfortunate. He most emphatically is not. I have never seen him on the television or heard him on the radio, and frankly I doubt if most (all?) of the contributors to the AfD have either. He is not in any way a significant media or political figure in the United Kingdom. He is a guy that came fourth in a couple of student elections whilst at university, and now works (seemingly) as a press officer in local politics, in which capacity he has been interviewed a few times by the media. He may have presented a few times on QVC (I've removed this because I can't see a citation), which is a shopping channel on which the presenters (generally out of work small-time actors and drama students) essentially hold up watches, cheap jewellery, garden tools etc. whilst viewers bid for them. He is not notable enough to be here, as exemplified by the fact that none of the "keep" !voters actually related their reasoning to WP:BIO or to any other codified guideline or policy. I humbly submit that the "delete" voters did relate this content to WP:BIO, and quite convincingly debunked it on that basis. AfD is not a majority vote- the quality of the arguments should count. Anyway, it's no big deal and I certainly am not accusing you of bad-faith in any way. I'll wait a few weeks and then have another go- I suppose it might be kept then also, but that's part of the magic of Wikipedia; one never knows how things are going to turn out, regardless of how overwhelming the evidence...! All the best, Badgerpatrol 10:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
