Ilja Mohandas ("Andy") Hoepelman (born March 26, 1955 in Hilversum, Noord-Holland) is head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University Medical Center, Utrecht in the Netherlands. He is also a former water polo player from The Netherlands, who won the bronze medal with the Dutch Men's Team at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. ==Water polo==
Hoepelman was a member of the Dutch waterpolo team who won the bronze medal at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. After retiring from competitive water polo in 1984 he became an international water polo referee. In 2006 he founded, together with Johan Aaantjes, the regional training facility for young water polo players "Talent Centraal". He is currently also the water polo official from UZSC at the Dutch national swimming and water polo club. In 2007 he won with his team the Gold medal at the European Masters waterpolo championships (50+) in Istanbul

Hoepelman is currently Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University Medical Center, Utrecht. He has also been Professor of Medicine there since August 1998. In addition he is a staff member at the Eijkman-Winkler Institute for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Hoepelman received his medical training from the University of Utrecht, obtaining his doctorate in 1978 and his MD degree in 1980. He completed two internships at the university in 1980 and 1985 to earn his board certification as a specialist in Internal Medicine. He received his PhD in 1989. In 1991-2 he worked at the Rockefeller University, New York in the laboratory of Prof. Elaine Tuomanen, and at the Memorial-Sloan Kettering (Department of Infectious Diseases, Prof. Dr. D. Armstrong). In 1993, he was board certified as a specialist in infectious diseases.
He also heads a training programme in infectious disease for internal medicine specialists at the University Hospital Utrecht. He was the previous editor-in-chief of the Netherlands Journal of Medicine and editor of the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, Clinical Microbiology and Infection, and the Dutch Textbook of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Currently he is one of the editors of the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. Moreover, he is one of the eight editors of the Textbook on Infectious Diseases (Cohen & Powderly). He is the author of more than 250 published articles and is a member of several professional associations including the American Society for Microbiology and the European Society for Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He has been the secretary of the Dutch/Flemish Society for Infectious Diseases, he is secretary of the European study group in viral hepatitis.
