Andries de Witt

Andries de Witt was Grand Pensionary of Holland between 1619 and 1621. He was the successor of Johan van Oldebarnevelt, who had been executed in 1619.
After the death of Stadtholder Frederik Henderik the Dutch_Republic became divided between adherents to the prince of Orange and the civilian aristocracy. Andries de Witt belonged to the second group. In 1650 the two group came into militairy conflict when William II inprisoned de Witt and other partisans and layed siege to Amsterdam.
A compromise was made and de Witt and the other prisoners were released but had to give up their functions. Shortly after William II died.
Andries de Witt was the father of Cornelis de Witt and Johan de Witt.
