Andrey Alexandrovich Melnikov (Russian: Мельников Андрей Александрович) (April 11, 1968 — January 8, 1988[1]) was a Private, machine gunner of the 9th Company, 345th Independent Guards Airborne Regiment, 40th Army. Private Melnikov was present during the Battle for Hill 3234 as a RPK gunner. During the late night of January 8, Private Melnikov blunted a strong muhajadeen attack on the the 9th Company's position, at the cost of his life. For his bravery and skill under fire, Private Melnikov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
