Andrew Sockalexis

Andrew Sockalexis A member of the Penobscot Indian Nation, Andrew was born into a family of athletes on 11 January 1891. His older cousin was baseball player Louis Sockalexis. In 1913, soon after placing second in the Boston marathon, Andrew married a fellow Penobscot, Pauline Shay from his reservation village at Indian Island, Oldtown, Maine. After several years of suffering from tuberculosis, he died on August 16, 1919. Andrew was an American track and field athlete who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics, placing fourth in the marathon competition.
