Roberts grew up in Amersham, England and he attended Royal Holloway at the University of London[1]. After RHUL, Roberts got a job as a policeman in the Thames Valley Police force. However, he quickly used his management and financial skills to start a small investment company, Roberts Investments, which together with Roberts Investment Assets, joined together to make RIG .[2]
Roberts started RIG with $1.2 million in 1998; today the firm controls $3 billion in equity [3]. With an estimated current net worth of around $803 million (£409 million), he is ranked by Sunday Times as the 184th richest person in the UK.

With a fortune estimated by Forbes at $803 million, Roberts is the 184th richest Briton. His $18 million house is 29,000 square feet and sits on 12 acres in Oxfordshire, England. He also has homes in New York City, Chateau Le Mont - in France, Switzerland and the British Virgin Islands. Even though he has accumulated vast wealth, he still works as a volunteer policeman. He has an increasing salary from RIG that, in 2007, was almost $40 million.[4].

Roberts and his wife donated £3000 to the Conservative Party in 2007[5].

Roberts has an art collection worth in the region of $130 million.[6] He is a modern art collector, and has helped friends such as Charles Saatchi fund purchases from artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. He is also a trustee of the Howard Art Gallery in New York City.[7]
