Andrew Ibrahim

Andrew Ibrahim, aged 19 at the time of his arrest, is a British Muslim convert, also known as 'Isa Ibrahim' [1] after his conversion to Islam, who was arrested by police in the city of Bristol on suspicion of terrorism on April 17, 2008. He is the son of an NHS consultant[2][3] pathologist.[4] At the time of his arrest he was a student at City of Bristol College.

It is believed he was a public school boy.[5][6]

After his arrest police evacuated nearby residents[7] of Comb Paddock, Westbury-on-Trym, a Bristol suburb, whilst soldiers from the Royal Logistics Corps[8] carried controlled explosions at his home/flat.[9]

Ibrahim was arrested after covert inquiries prompted by an intelligence tip-off from within the city's Muslim community.[10]

The police also searched and sealed off nearby woodland as part of their inquires.[11]

Ibrahim is being held and questioned by terrorist squad officers after they raided his house and arrested him.

On April 30 Ibrahim was charged with terrorist offences and accused of possession of an explosive substance, intent to commit terrorism and possession of articles for terrorist purposes and was accused of possessing Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine, also known as HMTD, which is an explosive organic chemical compound. He is also accused of possessing two home-made vests, ball bearings, air gun pellets, nails and screws, wired circuitry, batteries and electric bulb filaments.[12]

He will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on April 30, 2008.[13]

On April 30 Ibrahim appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court Ibrahim was remanded in custody until May 23 by City of Westminster magistrates after a short hearing.[14][15][16][17][18]

As of May 23 Ibrahim is due to appear at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, accused of having an explosive substance, hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, with intent and also charged with intending to commit a terrorist act by intending to construct and detonate an improvised explosive device.[19]

On May 23 Ibrahim appeared for the hearing at the Old Bailey via a video-link from London's Belmarsh jail and has been remanded in custody. He is accused of having articles for terrorism including two home-made vests, ball bearings, nails and screws. He is also charged with making or having an explosive - hexamethylene triperoxide diamine - with intent.

Mr Justice Calvert-Smith informed Ibrahim that his trial could take place in January next year. He also informed him that it had not yet been decided if it would be heard in London or the West Country.[20]
