[edit] Biography

Andrés Mignucci FAIA (born 1957, Ponce, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican architect and urbanist. His work has received recognition for its integration of the disciplines of architecture, urban design and landscape architecture in the creation of public spaces with a sense of place, human scale, and environmental responsibility. In 2005 Andrés Mignucci was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. [1]

[edit] Education

Mignucci studied architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (BS Arch (Honors), 1979) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) receiving a Master of Architecture degree in 1982. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee he studied under Francis D.K. Ching, Wayne Attoe, Amos Rapoport and Gary Moore. At MIT, Mignucci studied primarily under Maurice K Smith, Jan Wampler FAIA, N. John Habraken and Fernando Domeyko. In 1980 he worked with N. John Habraken in The Grunsfeld Variations, a research project dealing with the thematic design of urban tissues.[2] He was assistant to Giancarlo de Carlo, member of Team 10 in the Parma - Level 3 Design Studio at MIT, and participated in the research for the ILAUD 1980 program in Urbino, Italy.

[edit] Career

From 1983 to 1986 he worked as urban designer with Stephen Carr and Kevin A. Lynch in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His early work included collaboration in the development Master Plans for Reno, NV; Roanoke VA, Chattanooga TN, St. Petersburg, FL, and Providence, RI. In 1986 Mignucci served as lecturer at MIT teaching with German architect Erich Schneider-Wessling (Cologne, 1931). Their competition entry for the Bayer Informationzentrum in Leverküsen, Germany won first prize. The building was completed in 1988. In 1988, Mignucci returned to Puerto Rico establishing Andrés Mignucci Arquitectos in San Juan. Mignucci divided his time between practice, teaching, and research. In 1990, along with architects Jorge Rigau and Emilio Martinez, Mignucci co-directed a collaborative Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic research study on Dominican Architecture in the early 20th century. The work received the 'Research Award at the Bienal de Arquitectura de Santo Domingo and was published under the title Arquitectura Dominicana 1890-1930 [3]. In 1992, as President of the American Institute of Architects-Puerto Rico, Mignucci curated the exhibition and published Arquitectura Contemporanea en Puerto Rico 1976-1992. [4]. Mignucci's main contribution has been in the field of public space design. His major projects include PARQUE DE LOS NIÑOS and PARQUE DE SANTURCE, large scale landscape restoration projects along the Caño de Martin Peña; the El Condado public space system, which includes the PLAZA ANTONIA QUIÑONES, LA VENTANA AL MAR, PLAZA LAS NEREIDAS and PLAZA DEL INDIO; the restoration of PARQUE LUIS MUÑOZ RIVERA (Luis Muñoz Rivera Park), San Juan's oldest public space; and the PLAZA DE ISABELA, the town square in the northwest municipality of Isabela.
