Mar Lodge Estate Grampian : An Archaeological Survey is a good source for information on how Mar Forest was used from the 17th century to the 19th as it gives names, and dates to many of the ruins dotted across Mar Lodge Estate - and shows that people once worked, and more crucially lived, much further up the Glens of Mar Lodge Estate than they do today.

The ‘Grampian’ in the title refers to the the former ‘Scottish Region’ that preceded the re-creation of Aberdeenshire in 1996 - not the mountain range.
