An Leabhar Breac

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Leabhar Breac (The Speckled Book) is the name given to a manuscript compiled by Murchadh Ó Cuindlis of Bally Lough Deacker, at Duniry in eastern Clanricarde (now east County Galway) between the years 1408 and 1411. An alternative title for it is Leabhar Mór Daidhri (The Great Book of Duniry).

Consisting mainly of religious material, the book was consulted by Brother Mícheál Ó Cléirigh of the Four Masters in 1629. The Royal Irish Academy purchased it in 1789 and it is held in the Academy's library in Dublin.

Duniry - Dún Daighre - is situated about half-an-hour's drive south-east of the town of Loughrea, and in the medieval era was home to a branch of the bardic Clann Mac Aodhagáin, who served as brehons for the Clanricarde.
