Amy Elizabeth Imrie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amy Imrie (18701944) was a British heiress and one of the wealthiest women in Britain who, at the age of 37, became a Roman Catholic nun and, subsequently, Mother Superior of the Order of Poor Clares. [1]

Born Amy Elizabeth Pollard in British Guiana (Guyana, following its independence in May 1966), she was adopted by William Imrie, co-owner of White Star Line shipping, and became the sole heir to his fortune upon his death in 1906. The following year she became Sister Mary Clare of the Order of Poor Clares, eventually leading the convent as Mother Clare Imrie. In 1910 she funded the building of St Mary of the Angels Church in Liverpool.

Amy Elizabeth Imrie died in the Cornwall coastal town of Looe in the year of her 74th birthday.
