Amputee Soccer Championship, Central America
One of the tragic legacies of conflicts in Central America in the decade of the 1980's was a large number of unmapped land mines, especially along the Nicaraguan-El Salvadorian border.
To bring attention to the problem, and to assist in the rehabilitation of amputees, several international "Amputee Soccer Championships" were organized in this period. This postage stamp (El Salvador #C546) commemorates the Salvadorian victory in the September 1989 fourth such championship.
