Amos Fortune, Free Man is a novel by Elizabeth Yates that won the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1951.

The plot deals with the life of an African-American prince named At-mun. He was captured and sold into slavery in his teens, learned to read and write,was given a new name, Amos Fortune, and bought his freedom at age 59. He wanted a wife so he bought a slave named Lily and freed her for marriage. She died so he found another slave to marry named Lydia. When she died, he found a third, Violet, who lived with him and their daughter Celyndia, for many happy years. They rented a piece of land and they opened a small tannery. After many hard-working years, he managed to finally buy a farm.
