Among the Hidden is a 1998 young adult novel by Margaret Peterson Haddix concerning a fictional future in which drastic measures have been taken to quell overpopulation. It is the first of seven novels in the Shadow Children series.

Luke Garner is an illegal 3rd child. If he is caught, his whole family will be punished to death including his two brothers and his mother and father.
One day Luke sees a girl in the window of a house where he knows two other children live. He discovers that her name is Jen and she is also a shadow child like himself and he experiences things he has never tried before such as junk food, TV, and computer with her. On the computer they enter a private chat room with other third children. Together they organize a rally against the Population Police. Luke refuses to join the protesters. Later he finds out that all the kids that went to the rally were killed. Luke then dedicates himself to helping illegal 3rd children like himself. Luke finds out everyone gets killed and and almost kills Jen's dad. But the dad jumps up from the chair and stops Luke. He then saves Lukes' life. Luke leaves home, the end. Jen's dad found Luke in his house and then told Luke that the population police were coming to his house and told him to get in a closet where there was a secret door and he had to push against the wall to find it (There was no secret door, Jen's dad just wanted Luke to push against the wall and hide. Then the population police show up and Jen's dad opens up the closet which Luke was inside. The population police put some kind of microphone on Jen's Dad so they can hear what he is saying so to communicate with Luke he has to write on paper. The next day Luke's family is visited by Jen's dad. Luke gets the identity of Lee Grant(Died the day before in an accident.) He then gets to leave the property of his family and gets sent to a boarding school
