Ammophila breviligulata Fern. |
Ammophila breviligulata (American beachgrass or American marram grass) is a species of grass native to eastern North America and the Great Lakes region. It is a very good example of a xerophyte, being able to thrive on arid to semi-arid beach dunes. Its root system acts as a beach stabilizer, and has been introduced to the Pacific coast to help reduce sand erosion, but is now considered an invasive species from California to British Columbia.
American beachgrass is narrower than its closest relative, Ammophila arenaria (European marram grass), and its inflorescences can reach 30 cm long.
