Amka

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amka (Arabic: عمقا‎; Hebrew: עַמְקָה‎) is a moshav in the Matte Asher Regional Council of Israel's North District, near Acre. It was founded in 1949 by a group of Yemenite Jewish immigrants. The name comes from an Arab village that was in the same spot earlier.

The Palestinian Arab village that was depopulated in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War was called Amqa. Its population was 1,240 in 1945 and its total land area was over 6,000 dunums. It was captured by Israel's Sheva Brigade on July 16, 1948 during Operation Dekel an Israeli offensive in the Galilee.
