[edit] VP 1.36 - odd behaviour rolling back diffs
If I try to rollback a diff, VP tries to open an article with the title of the name of the last editor, and doesn't roll back. So, if IP 10.20.30.40 vandalizes, and I click on rollback, VP tries to open an article called 10.20.30.40, which doesn't exist, obviously. Messages seem to get added to the IP's talk page, though. Advice please. Mr Stephen 09:01, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

- When does this happen? What feed are you using? Is it only specific articles, or all of them? More info needed. Ale_Jrbtalk 13:41, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- I start up VP, then click on "Update List" on the "My Watchlist tab. The list populates. I find an unwanted edit (except in VP the diff is of the "diff=cur&oldid=prev" form, but it doesn't seem to make any difference). I click on "Rollback" and up comes (in this case) "editing 24.227.104.18", and then a page like this appears. Today is the forst time I've ever seen a problem like this. I have this same problem, but only on the simple rollback button, with no warnings. The rollbacks accompanied by warnings work fine.Someguy1221 19:52, 10 April 2007 (UTC)I just realized they all aren't working. My preferences are set to prompt me on entering a blank edit summary, and for some reason stops me from editing even though VP enters one automatically, but VP doesn't display the prompt. It makes the edits to talk pages, but not to actual articles, not sure why. I think I fixed it just by disabling the prompts, but it still annoys me that I can't use that feature of wikipedia. However, I'm not sure if this is the same problem the rest of you have, or if this is more a bug with wikipedia than VP.Someguy1221 19:57, 10 April 2007 (UTC)- Damnit, still doesn't work. I give up. [edit] "Script error"
Hello,
My vandal proof seems to work fine, however, whenever I click on almost any link I get the following error message:
"Internet Explorer script error"
An error has occurred on a script on this page.
Line: 57 Char: 6 Error: Unexpected call to method or property access Code: 0 URL: (Whatever the URL of the page I was trying to access was.)
Do you wish to continue running scripts on this page?
The title of this page is an internet explorer error (despite the fact that I use firefox), which seems odd.
The pages load fine, and everything else works, it is just that clicking yes on all of these error messages gets *very* annoying.
Thanks,
Ninja! 21:50, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ditto. Getting exactly the same thing. Gets somewhat irritating after about 20 seconds. Any help much appreciated. LibLord 22:07, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
-
- Go to AmiDaniel.com and download AmiDaniel's program that closes IE script errors automatically. Run it whenever you're using VP and they won't show up. Or, disable any non-IE compatible scripts in your monobook.js using the following code:
/*#### This area contains scripts only for Firefox ####*/ var detect = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase(); var IE; var place = detect.indexOf('msie') + 1; if (place) IE=true; if (!IE) { /* Put all scripts you want disabled only in Internet Explorer in this area. */ }

Hi, I have the same problem, and I downloaded "AutoClose ScriptError" for Vandal Proof, but apparently the problem remains... What should I do? [edit] Done Corrupt list?
I tried to sign in to VP for the first time in a couple of weeks, and is says: "The user list is corrupt. Please contact a moderator to have it repaired." Erm... explanations, anyone? ≈ The Haunted Angel 17:05, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- If you are getting this error, you are not running the latest version of VandalProof. Ensure you are running version 1.36. You may need to be reapproved. Ale_Jrbtalk 17:07, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ah alright, thanks a lot ^_^ ≈ The Haunted Angel 17:18, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Runtime error"
Okay, this is another error I'm getting. I haven't had a chance to test VP with scripts disabled/warnings supressed on my home computer, but from other computers I get a "Runtime error" on "Line 56" whenever I click practically anything. It seems to work fine, but as before, the popups are becoming quite a pain. Thanks in advance, again, Ninja! 13:05, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and another note. The computer's im trying to use VP on during the day are on a shared network, don't know if this could cause problems or not. Ninja! 13:05, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, maybe you should disable JS in IE, like I did. Snowolf (talk) CON COI - 21:42, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- Oops I see that you already know that. Let's wait for the devs than. Snowolf (talk) CON COI - 21:43, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Is it a Runtime Error or a Internet Explorer Script Error? If it's a script error, you may trying clearing your IE temporary internet files and cookies, disabling js (as you stated you already have), and removing any Wikipedia scripts you have installed. If all else fails, try downloading the hacky CloseScriptErr.exe from http://amidaniel.com/pub/misc and running it alongside VP, which will prevent script errors from being displayed. AmiDaniel (talk) 00:27, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
No, its a runtime error. "A runtime error has occured. Do you wish to debug?" The error is on "Line 56" Ninja! 21:27, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm also recieving a runtime errors, and have done twice now. The last one said something about a shared resource being used, and then closed VP once I clicked OK. -Panser Born- (talk) 14:53, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] double "welcome" in the anon template
When I use the anon template on someone. I get a ==Welcome== added, while there is allready that mention in the template itself, which end by having to remove that mention manually. Sadly I didn't found in the custombuttons.txt how to remove that unwanted additions.

[edit] Recent Changes updating
When I press the 'update' button to update the recent changes tracker, it often does not properly update the recent changes tracker at all. I tried modifying my settings in Internet Explorer, but that does not help. ThePointblank 02:46, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also another bug I am encountering is that VP is not picking up previous warnings given to a person, especially IP vandals, which leads me to often give a test 1 warning instead of an more appropriate higher level warning. ThePointblank 02:51, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Same here. I'm always getting the same recent changes list from 5 minutes ago when I click the "Update" button. Even restarting doesn't help. Is there a bug in the RSS feed, like "time limit exceeded" or something? ~~Eugene2x Sign here ☺ ~~ 20:04, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Contributions vandalism revert error.
When I was searching through a users contributions on VP 1.36 (the new one), I reverted multiple vandalisms and found that all VP did was post a warning but fail to revert the vandalisms. Could you please fix this? As I ended up warning User_talk:75.69.14.108 twice for his vandalism but not reverting. ~~ AVTN T CVPS 09:21, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] VP can't read some characters?
When I linked to a diff in the page Svetlana Ražnatović vandal proof would not load page history, and mistakenly reported that the most recent editor was the page's only editor, which was not true. After trying to rollback, VP failed to rollback, and posted an incorrect message on the vandal's talk page identifying the vandalized page as Svetlana Ražnatović. [edit] uw-af1 -> uw-afd1
In the preset for the rollback template the uw-af1 has to be changed. Because it is not functional right now.
[edit] Update List doesn't update the list !
After downloading VP 1.36 ... getting all the script errors ... and downloading the app to suppress them, I've logged in and I have a blank list under the My Watchlist tab. I push "Update List", and there is a brief flurry of suppressed script errors, and then ... nothing. The list is still blank. I'm using XP Professional if that makes a difference. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? --Stephen Burnett 19:26, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Hmmm. I really liked the idea of what this software could do for me, and I was looking forward to using it. Unfortunately though it either doesn't work for me or I don't understand it properly. [edit] Strange thing happened when I tried to file a report on an IP vandal
When I first tried to file a WP:AIV report on an IP vandal for repeatedly deleting content from an article, I had a message blocking me from filing the report from Vandal Proof. But, the message had nothing to do with the program. Instead, the message indicated that spam was being blocked. I tried again to repeat the progress, and I got the same message. So, because I could not file the report directly from Vandal Proof, I manually filed the vandalism report by going to the AIV page. lwalt 08:06, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- AMENDING EARLIER RESPONSE. I also spoke with another editor who was online doing vandal patrol at the same time as me. From what this person says, the problem comes from a different source, which the user pointed out in his response to me. lwalt 08:45, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

- I noted your comments on the Pamantasan article about something to do with a spam problem. Did you have a message that mentioned blocking spam while you used Vandal Proof for vandal patrol? I'm having that same problem, and I posted this information on a forum about this issue. lwalt
- I'm not using VandalProof, the problem is with the spam blacklist here, something appears to be wrong with it and it is blocking links to external sites that it shouldn't. I replaced the page with an {{inuse}} tag due to the vandalism on it and removed the links affected- I am unsure if the problem is fixed yet. GDonato (talk) 08:19, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Scripting error
I saw the same errors during the last run of Vandal Proof, but didn't catch the messages that appeared on screen. During my current run, the same scripting message appeared with the following text:

VandalProof isn't reverting the page. When I click "Rollback- Vandal 1" all it does it warn the vandal but it doesn't revert his vandalism; I have to do it manually. Does anybody know what the problem could be? When I try and rollback an edit that doesn't merit a warning to the editor, it takes me the user's page and doesn't do anything to the article itself. My IP is not static. So I have to use the secure pages on WP to keep from getting logged out. Not often but sometimes, and unpredictably, so I can't reproduce at will, when posting a warning comment on a vandal's Talk page, and the Article being referenced contains an accented letter, it replaces it by some other character, or pair of characters as if it was not using the the same encoding (maybe that is the problem?). [edit] Great tool, but a projection of functionality?
People, I commend everyone associated with the creation of this tool. Its flexibility and unending number of abilities is outstanding; however, the length of time to get a fix is frustrating. I understand that the principle of, "you get what you paid for" is applicable here and that creators don't have an unlimited amount of time to correct a tool which provides no remuneration. However, being given a projection when you think the bugs will be corrected would be helpful. Maybe it is naive to think that is possible, if so, please overlook my ignorance; if not, please provide a time frame you think is realistic? Until then I will reluctantly stop using this excellent tool. --Storm Rider (talk) 16:20, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
- I think (I'm not sure) that AmiDaniel is working more on WikiMonitor now, his newer program. I don't like it as much as VP, although I know it is beta software. I would like VP to be improved too... if only I was a programmer. RainbowOfLight Talk 05:48, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

- Should we install Wikimonitor instead of VP? Does it do the same things? --Storm Rider (talk) 21:45, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- AmiDaniel is, at the moment, almost totally inactive with regard to these projects (at least online, anyway). WikiMonitor is his newest endeavour, while I am in charge of maintaining VandalProof. A bug-fix release of VP has been released, which fixes most current issues, but can only be published on his say-so - by contract - and I have been unable to contact him through all usual channels. That's the current situation.
- As for the future, at the moment, WikiMonitor is more stable. VandalProof was built originally as a simple rollback tool, and is now bloated, highly unmanageable, written in an outdated language, full of parts that don't work properly or at all, and just very old-fashioned. WikiMonitor is built using the same language, but is a much cleaner piece of software, and actually does what it is meant to. I am working on a total rebuild of VandalProof, from the ground up, rewriting everything from scratch, using the most up-to-date software available, but this takes huge amounts of time, and that's time I just don't have at the moment. I work on it when I get round to it, but that really isn't often. Hopefully, that summary will put things into perspective. My hands are tied on this one, and even if they weren't, I don't know how different things would be. Ale_Jrbtalk 22:03, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks Ale for an honest answer. We'll have to wait and see then. At the moment I'm using VP as a browser/diff viewer and doing the reverts manually as I do not trust the auto-function not to warn the wrong user and create embarrassment. Please keep us informed of progress. Cheers! Alexf(Talk/Contribs) 22:08, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- Should we install Wikimonitor instead of VP? Does it do the same things? --Storm Rider (talk) 21:45, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

- This is valuable information. I am completely impressed with what VandalProof attempts to do and just as frustrated that it does not function properly. My recommendation is to immediately stop accepting new editors to use thi program.
- I wish there was some way that I could lend Ale a hand, but programming is beyond my skillset. I assume that rewriting a program from scratch, particularly one as versatile as VandalProof, is complicated. I appreciate all your work; my thanks to your efforts to make Wikipedia a better service.
- As an aside, I made the unfortunate choice of using WP:Twinkle, but it has just as many problems also. I have since deleted both of these programs until something comes along that functions properly. Please keep me posted. Cheers. --Storm Rider (talk) 23:56, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bugfix release: 1.3.7
I've made the version 1.3.7 release available for download. This is strictly a bugfix release. Special thanks to Alex for his patch. If you encounter any problems, please contact Alex or report it to https://amidaniel.com/bugs . Thanks for your patience. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:25, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- For everyone who just downloaded this, the RSS feed doesn't work (for some people, at least) in 1.3.7 (you have to close and reopen the program to update it). This has already been reported to the bugs website. You can make VP functional in the meantime by enabling "normal feed" (file>Feeds and Prefs>Normal feed>Enable normal feed). This feed loads the entire article you're viewing, so it can take much longer to view diffs, and it doesn't support color coding or filtering, but it's usable. However, I would still like to thank AmiDaniel and Alex (I guess, mostly) for finally ending my VP withdrawl :-D Someguy1221 07:21, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Possible bug
I am not sure if this is a bug or a request for an upgrade. Recently I have been bumping up against Cluebot and other vandalism tools where both of us are reverting at the same time. What genearlly happens is VP will move from the article and post a warning on the offending editor's page; unfortunately, two warnings are the result for the same offense. Is there any way for the program to acknowledge a conflict and not post a warning? Any help would be very helpful. Thanks.
BTW, I really do enjoy using this tool! Though I have ended up with posting a few warnings to the wrong editor page, it is sporadic and happens rarely relative to the number of edits I have been doing. Your work is greatly appreciated. --Storm Rider (talk) 21:33, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] {{edit summary}}
I'm not sure if this is a wikipedia error or VP, but the format of this doesn't seem to coming out right. It's been a few days since I used it, but if I remember right, there needs to be carriage return placed after the first line for this to appear correctly. Jauerback 14:35, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Incorrect user warned
For some reason whenever I am viewing a Diff it shows the status of the user who edited prior to the current editor. For instance if it's a vandal, it for some reason shows the stats of the editor who edited before the vandal opposed to the vandal and when I rollback as a vandal, it wars the editor who edited prior to the vandal editing and it doesn't warn the vandal. Wikidudeman (talk) 19:42, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- What version of VP are you running? 1.36 and below have this problem for many users, but not version 1.37, unless you're just the first one to report it. Someguy1221 19:47, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- I had the old version. I'm going to download the new one. That's what the problem was. Wikidudeman (talk) 19:51, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 1.3.7 problem
I posted this in the AmiDaniel.com forums and no one answered me. I downloaded version 1.3.7 and it's still identifying as 1.3.6. Also, it's having a hard time getting updates (it gets the same updates time and time again), and even though I have it set to update every 30 seconds, it's updating much faster, at every 10 seconds. RainbowOfLight Talk 01:36, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- I've had the same problems with fetching updates. To get new updates, I have to restart the program. I also haven't been able to update my vandalism stats for many months. I think VP2 is being worked on, though, so VP1.37 probably isn't getting as much attention. Tuvok[T@lk/Improve me] 02:00, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
-
- Did you make sure to place the 1.3.7 files in the 1.3.6 folder? It should identify itself as 1.361 once loaded, and make sure it's not this problem. Someguy1221 03:12, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- Oh. Well, it's a little silly to call it 1.3.7 and have it identify as 1.3.6.1, but I guess I understand. Still, I've enabled the Normal Feed, and I don't get any results at all in the list of recent changes in the program. RainbowOfLight Talk 03:24, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Can't Log In
I have been approved, and I have downloaded the newest version of VP (the 1.3.6 zip and 1.3.7 exe), and once I open the exe, I type in my information, click "Log into WP", it'll show my cursor as loading for a few seconds, then the Username, Password and Privileges (saying that I have none) are all greyed out and the "Verify Authorization" button becomes active and once I click it, nothing happens. [edit] IP contributions not showing
Hello! I have a problem viewing the IP contibutions. When I go to the contribs tab, enter an IP as user and press "load contribs", a window appears saying retrieving contributions, but none appear. Contributions for registered users work perfect, but in order to view IP contributions it is necessary to use the browser window. I'm not sure if this is a known bug, or if I'm the only one getting it.
Oh, and also if I right click on the contribs window when it's empty, an error appears saying "Run-time error '91': Object variable or With block variable not set" and VP closes. Any suggestions on this one?
Just in case, I use Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer 7. I have only used VP version 1.38, so I don't know if I'd have had the same errors on earlier versions. ARTYOM 21:07, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
